NEX-VG10 vs. Gh2

The GH2 is a HD video-capable, "large sensor" camera that has a lot of very nice features, but it does not include live audio monitoring while recording (e.g.: there's _no_ built-in headphone jack).

The Sony NEX-VG10 is also a large sensor HD video-capable camera with many nice features, too, and it does have a headphone jack.

There are many other considerations.

It really depends on what you'll be using the cam for, and what's important to you.

Shooting a short, static settings, but I need autofocusing, as my eyes are not very good at judging focus. 550D also comes into consideration. As for audio, I intend to use a marantz pmd611, as ntg-3 is phantom power.

Between the GH2 & the 550D, the GH2 is generally a much more capable video camera.

Although no autofocus system is perfect, the GH2's autofocus is reported to be very good. Also, using live preview in manual focus mode (not during recording) the GH2 can magnify the scene by several times, making exact, sharp focusing much easier than it otherwise would be.

(I don't know if the Sony NEX-VG10 has a magnify manual focus feature.)

Having seen some VG10 footage up close and personal, GH2 footage should look significantly better - GH1 footage is far better already.

What about the autofocus of the 550D? I like the color rendering of the GH2 much more, 550D is oversaturating everything, but: GH2 needs lenses for autofocusing and costs rise to 1850$ (with 14-42 and 20mm pancake). I would have nikkorglass (and canon-glass) vor 550D. This body is to have for 700$.

NEX-VG10 is 1825$ here.

The NEX have a better encoder than the GH1/GH2 or any other camera..

The Sony one will give you the best picture you never had, the encoder of Sony are really more interesting... the AVCHD Sony is the most powerfull encoder, the problem, it's because Sony put some limitation on the software configuration, you can't see really the better of the Sony Encoder.

Actually the footage of NEX on vimeo didn't convince me much, somehow it looks all out of focus.

Isn't it ironic how people complain about the lack of 24p in the NEX and complain about the lack of 25p in the GH2 :-)
