NEX 5R for Video?

Hey all, i'm thinking about getting an NEX5R. I'm interested in using it mostly for video. I've got the FS700 and looking for a smaller camera to share lenses with. Something that wouldn't look odd pulling out at Walmart for the occasional vlog.

The price is about right for the 5R, and I also like that the 5R has the screen you can flip up for self shooting. They new AF sensor sounds great too.

I'm just looking for some opinions on the NEX 5R (or N) video capabilities to help me decide whether or not to get the camera.

We'd be shooting mostly vlog style. Some run and gun things like pranks maybe. Possibly looking to mix some 5R footage in when the FS700 is just too large to bring.

Also, are the built in mics for sound good enough for something like a vlog for You Tube? I know you can get that mic attachment, but even that might make it a little hard to mess with.

Would love to hear any thoughts about it. Do you think the NEX5R would be worthwhile for video?

Thanks!

Hi Chad;

I have used the Nex 5n extensive, is a nice camera that produce a great image and have a good lowlight capacity, the drawbacks? random overheat, 29 mins limit (if can be reached), no audio input. I have asked about the overheat in the 5r and it looks is much better improved.

Have this in consideration too; the Nex 5/n/r have aliasing and moire too, less than the Canon but is there.

Good luck.

I read somewhere that the 5r has a weaker anti-aliasing filter than the 5n so potentially more aliasing and moire but it might resolve a bit more detail. I use a 5n as a b-cam for my 5D MKIII.

Great blog post Sam, the 5d2 and 5n really messed with the barcode and the dot pattern on the image of the hard drive. I agree with you and others, the 5n is a great little camera.

To the OP, I sold my original Nex5, then got the 5n because I missed the little bugger, then sold it cause I didn't feel like I was using it enough and now I have another - I just seem to miss not having one around when I just want some quick b-roll or don't want to lug around the big camera for video. So I keep buying and selling them - mostly because I'm an idiot. I have an EM5 which IMHO is a better stills camera, but Olympus doesn't do 24p yet, so it doesn't play nice with Sony. The 5n will overheat, though it seems to generate less heat at 24p over 60p (makes sense as its logically less processor intensive) and I always shoot with the LCD extended away from the body so a some of the heat (hopefully) can escape. Audio is so-so, better than a GoPro, but that's not saying much. I've never used in-cam audio as anything more than a sync track to something else - either recorded by the FS100 or by Zoom H1 mounted to a hot shoe adapter on the 5n.

controls are really really badly positioned, badly designed and super fiddly.

but its a good cam for stealth and incognito as I use these cams for street photography

edit:
+ 1 for sony to design the screen to flip up along the y axis, makes it feel a little like shooting medium format

Don't trust that test. Morgan is deinterlacing the 5d image (for some odd reason). It should look clean (with a bit of moire) now it just looks half resolution. I have the 5n, 7d and 5d mark III. Also had the 5d mark II. I've zoomed in to everything to really pixel peep. Should I do my own test to really put this point to rest because I'm seeing this link here and there and it slightly bugs me because it's not true (unless your workflow is screwed up). What happens to you happens also to these guys:

They are deinterlacing the image from the recorder. And then claiming the "ninja sucks" because it looks half-resolution. Well duh.

I may have some error in my workflow but dont see how.. this is the 5d2 not 5d3 btw

-mpeg steamclip - pro res - FCP - tiff - jpg

The res seems what I would expect, 90% of the nex5n and miles worse than the FS100 which does not line skip to create an image
