Hey all,

I bought my DVX100b a year ago from B&H and have used it sporadically since. It's very basic, all I bought with it at the time was a case to put it in and an extra battery. I'm looking into getting a mic and my budget is under $150 if that's even possible. I plan on using it for interviews mostly like news reporting on my college campus. I typically just hold the camera, nothing fancy. Is there a particular mic that does this well? I'm assuming it'll be in the form of a shotgun mic. Versatility would be neat, but that sounds expensive. What I need is something that'll work for a long long time without fail and with consistent results.

One other thing, If I wanted to give my camera a good cleaning and inspection is there someplace in CA that's really reputable? I live in Costa Mesa, go to school in Long Beach, so driving to LA isn't that difficult. I have a soon-to-expire warranty on it also.

This forum is pretty massive, I'm sure there have been similar posts, if anyone knows one off the top of their heads, copy and paste it!

Happy hunting :)

I forget the name of it, but I've seen this pretty decent looking mic/recorder deal floating around the net. I am not sure if you can by-pass the recording on the mic itself to get it into the camera. But if you don't mind syncing up in post, a mic like that might be a good option.

the rode ntg1. its only phantom powered so if u plan to use it on another camera or device ..then make sure they have that capability. its out of ur price range by about $100 though...but this is one of the best cheap shotguns u can get.

For interviews, unless you have an aversion to seeing the interviewee holding the mic, a handheld mic is going to give you far better results than any camera-mounted mic. The Electrovoice RE50 is often recommended here for this application. It's a little outside your budget at Full Compass, but maybe B&H wants to lose money on it...

Hand-held mics

Hand-held mics

The ElectroVoice RE50 is a hugely practical mic. They work well outside even in fairly windy conditions. (The Weather Channel uses them.) You can get them used on eBay for your budget, although they may be green rather than black. Use it with a cable until you save up a few bucks and then you can buy a wireless block transmitter to plug into it. If that's still too pricey, the 635A is another good choice and less expensive. I've done a lot of interview type shooting at trade shows, and getting the mic to the speaker is MUCH better than something camera mounted if there is any kind of background noise .

Don't know about LA, but if you want to send in equipment, I've had good response from the following service for my DVX100A:

They are in El Cajon Calif. A bit of a distance from LA. I was refered to them by some folks at San Diego State, which has a fairly well filled TV Production program (along with being the local PBS operator.)
