Newbie with several questions (help!)

I am the new owner of a DVX100a and I have several questions for those with more experience...
-Microphone- I bought an external microphone at best buy. The out of the mic is 1/4 phono plug but the dvx100a only has xlr connections, so I bought a converter at adio shack (from 1/4 phono to xlr female). Does anyone this is is bad or can ruin damage my camera?

-Hard-case= I bought a hard case for the camera and I have it s oeverything pretty much fits. My only worry is that I have to give it a slight tug to close it (granted, the case has foam molding that can form as time goes by) but I am still afraid that so much pressure can damage the camera. Did the same ting happen to your hard when you first bought it? was it a tight fit at first?

What are some recommended hard cases out there that people use? or am I just jumping the gun too quickly in thinking the camera doenst fit in the case I bought

-How can I manually export from a computer to the camera? If i put the camcorder on playback what do i press to record what I see on the vtr of the camcorder into the dv tape in the camcorder (in my last camcorder I had I would just press play and record)
Many Thanks to all,
Carlos

The microphone/adapter won't hurt your camera, but it's probably not a great microphone . . .

Many of us use Pelican cases; I use the 1550, which is about the biggest case they make which would still be OK as carry-on on a plane.

To export from the computer to the camera, use the "Print to Tape" option in your NLE. The NLE should control your camera automatically and you will have no need to press any buttons.

As for the mic... (and I'd agree that it's probably not too good... I'd return the mic and adapter and buy a mic that at least has an XLR connector; you can find some cheap but sorta acceptable ones... but if you want to use what you have...) you want to use the right 1/4 to XLR adapter, which will depend on whether the mic output is balanced or not. If the mic documentation doesn't say, you can check if the 1/4 inch plug has two metal parts separated by an insulator ("tip" and "sleeve") or three ("Tip", "Ring" and "sleeve") - that is, does it look like a mono plug, or like a stereo plug? The DVX (and almost all XLR equipment) is balanced... so make sure you have a proper balanced TRS -> XLR or unbalanced TS -> XLR as appropriate.

about the hard case:
it doesn't sound like this might be the case for you but you never know: a lot of the hard cases i've seen have the foam with a "finger" like pattern. you just cut the shape of your camera out of the foam so it's a custom fit as opposed to sandwiching it in between to pieces of flat foam... of coarse you probably have something different but it can't hurt just to make sure
