I have never used an NLE. I just got my DVX100a three months ago. I knew it was a technically demanding camera and I'm slowly learning.
Should I get Adobe Premier as a free gift or buy Vegas? I'm so new at this I thought maybe I could get familiar with Adobe because I heard it was easier to use for a person like me and then get Vegas when I'm more comfortable. I also am assuming that Vegas is a beter NLE but probably more difficult to get the hang of.

The flip side is me thinking that I should just get Vegas now and deal with learning how to use it now simply because it's so good. I can get it at the student web sites that have been mentioneed here for around $260.00.

My goal is to make feature films.
Thanks

Re: Newbie-should I get Premier free or buy Vegas?

It really depends on what version of premiere that you would be getting free. If it is Premiere pro 1.5, then I would say go for it, as it completely supports the dvx. If it is anything else, get vegas. I switched from premiere to vegas about 6 months ago, and I havn't looked back. As far as how easy it is to pick up, Vegas all the way. Premiere can take a while to figure out, but if you have never used an NLE before, Vegas will give you the fastest results as far as how long it takes you to learn it. I don't think Premiere or Vegas are really better than the other one. Each has it's own advantages/dissadvantages, however, I have found Vegas to be a much more stable environment. I am a student as well, and let me tell you that the Academic version of Vegas is exactly the same as the retail version. In fact, it won't even say academic version on it at all when you buy it. Once you are done with school there really are no restrictions limiting you from using the software for professional apps. In premiere, you are limited by the academic liscence, and you will have to upgrade to the next version before you can leagally use it professionally. Overall I prefer vegas to Premiere because it is much faster and intuitive to edit with. I has great 24p support that is now on it's second generation, and with DVD architect you can burn "true" 24p dvds. Yippi.

For a total beginner to NLEs, if you're planning to use Vegas, I'd recommend using it now. Vegas has a different workflow that at first glance appears stiffling to those experienced with other, more traditional NLEs. It seems that if you have no prior ideas of what an NLE is, you'll get the hang of Vegas with less issues.

On the other hand, a free program is a free program. As scharky said, if it's the latest version of Premier Pro (v1.5), then you might want to check it out before dropping the cash on Vegas. If it works for you then great! While I do think Vegas is a better editing environment, there's no question that you can edit your projects in premier. IMO, as long as you can work with video, there's hope for that program :)

Also, to completely contradict what I first said, there is value to learning an NLE that makes use of a more traditional workflow, in that you could then get on nearly any other NLE that uses a similar workflow without too much issue. That would be a good thing about learning premier.

Actually, that's a great point -- since Vegas' workflow is different, it might be even more suitable for someone who's never used an NLE before, because they won't have any habits to overcome.

I'd vote for Vegas in your case.

I actually am registered. 'filmfanatic' is my name but I spelled it with an 'm' by mistake.

Re: Newbie-should I get Premier free or buy Vegas?

Couldn't you get Premiere for free anyways, and then decide to buy Vegas later? You'd still be spending the same amount of money...

Re: Newbie-should I get Premier free or buy Vegas?

Yeah I was going to do what you mentioned. I thought anything I can learn with any NLE will be a help but the advice given above got me thinking that if Vegas and Premier work differently I'm going to go right to Vegas. I'm a bit over my head with the DVX but it fun and exciting and I'm getting there. Also My friend has the DVX100A and were writing a script that we're going to make. He uses FCP so I don't know if his knowledge will be helpful at all with Vegas but we'll see.
