newbie questions

I'm on the brink of a new camera just like everyone else. Its down to the HPX170 and EX1 (like everyone else). I'm still learning the whole HD workflow and I have a couple questions...................If you shoot a video with one of these cameras and need to use the variable frame rate option in 720p to get the slow motion effect, wouldn't it be pointless to shoot any other part of the video in 1080p? So if you needed to use this overcranking effect for a video, would you shoot everything else in 720p so the footage would match? If this is the case, then I wouldn't need the full 1080 sensor that the ex1 has, am I right? I'm still learning this stuff so please correct me if I'm way off.

I'm trying to talk myself into one camera or the other and no matter which way I turn, the other option always looks better. Help talk me into one of them. Thanks in advance for any insight.

I lean towards panny. Most people who use the panny shoot in 720 for in camera effects and the 'PN' recording mode. If you absolutely want 1080 but also want overcanking, 720 24p and 108024p from an HVX / HPX can be edited pretty seamlessly.

A few things that swayed me away from the EX1 - Rolling Shutter, lower bit data stream, 21 seconds to go from MCR to CAM mode, 4:2:0 colorspace, Long GOP codec...etc.
