Newbie Questions - Aperture & ISO/db Related.

I've had access to the AF102 lately, and plan to be shooting some footage with it. I bought an EOS adapter to use my 50mm 1.8 & such on it. It appears that there's no actual electronic connection from the adapter to the camera, so without the lens having an actual manual aperture ring.. I can't change the aperture at all?

I'm just confirming that's the case & that there's no changing it?

Also - I haven't had a lot of time to play with the camera, as well as that I'm young & fairly new to camera's, etc. I notice the camera has a Film mode & a Video mode, does it matter which you use other than for your preferences? Is -6db the same as ISO 200?

THANKS!

I know an electronic canon mount is being made, but for the time being, buy a different 50mm, since the canon 50mm 1.8 isn't anything to write home about. I'd recommend a nikon ais/ai/nonai 50mm 1.4 or a pentax smc 50mm 1.4. Both of these will have aperture rings and will have very affordable adapters for the af100.

Now, if you have a collection of EOS lenses, best wait for the adapter then instead of replacing all of your glass. If this is the case, still replace your 50mm :)

Shoot on film mode, im assuming its like the hvx where video just allows you to do interval recording and go down to 1/15 shutter. as for the db, im not sure.

I don't have a large lens collection (2 eos kit lenses, 50 1.8, nikon 24 2.8 & 135 2.8), but as for buying new lenses go, I plan on focusing on old nikon lenses simply because they're nice & manual as well as quite cheap for a student like me.

The 50mm definitely isn't great, but it does the trick for me. I was considering buying a Nikon 50mm (and selling the one I've got) or possibly buying a 35mm seeing as that'll be closer to 50mm than a 50mm (I own a T2i). Ultimately though, buying any lens at the moment is pretty rough on my wallet - That being said, I just had a quick look online & came across a pentax smc 50mm 1.4 for quite cheap.

Also a couple other questions I have - This one in regards to adapters, how much does it affect the image - A DP came in & helped with setting up some shots & working out what works & what doesn't which was great and he mentioned how using adapters can make the focusing quite a pain? Is that all? I think I can deal with focusing not being perfect though. At the moment, when I'm using my Nikon's, it's going Nikon with EOS adapter to the EOS-to-M3/4 mount. There's no glass in the adapters, so the image shouldn't be affected, right?

Another question I have to do with the AF102 - Is there a way of digitally zooming in on the image to get a better focus, or is it simply that button (I forget what it's called) that makes what's in focus appear really sharp on the LCD screen, etc.

Thanks again.

A nikon 50mm 1.4 should be 80-150 bucks while the pentax can be as low at 60 and as high as 130ish.

It sounds like you should get another adapter, using two adapters is kinda sketchy. They make nikon -> m4/3 that are like 25 bucks. snag one of those. The only problem you might have is focusing to infinity, but you're not taking video of the nebulas so its fine.

I do believe the af100 has some sort of focus assist.

I had a shoot today where I used different lenses. The Olympus 14-35 worked like a charm, the Voigtländer 50 worked like a charm. But I felt limited in how to use my excellent Canon 100L since it just as dumb as can be on the AF. Way easier to use lenses with electronic or manual aperture control. Focus on either lens works fine since all these tools works for any lens.

I would keep the Canon lenses you already have and, if you can afford it, buy the Birger adapter when it gets on the market.

The thing is I don't own an AF102, and it's likely that by the end of this year I won't have access to one again. It's mostly with what I'm shooting for the next 6-7 weeks that i'll be using it primarily, and possibly to shoot again at the end of the year but that's not a guarantee. The Nikon to EOS adapter is pretty small & it'll save me from forking out some money for another adapter.

The only focus assist I've come across is the button that makes the edges in focus really exaggeratedly sharp.

I can't exactly wait around for the Birger adapter. I have basically until next week at the minimum to get my lenses & that sorted.. or at least preferably by next week.

I might buy the Pentax 50mm because it's cheaper BUT also mainly because people from my country (NZ) are selling it online. Otherwise I'm also considering buying the Pentax Tokina Wide-Auto 35mm f2.8. It'll be handy having a 35mm especially because I know the director for the shoot I'm on would much prefer I use a 35mm. Does anyone know how well that lens holds up?
