Newbie question AF100/sound

I'm new to the video game so forgive this basic question, I have an AF-100. I'm used to the double system recording style for film, but should I record directly to the camera or on a separate system H4n, DAT etc... I guess what I'm asking is the sound quality from the AF-100 "broadcast quality?"

It is BC quality although some will criticise the Mic Preamps in the camera.

Test it against external recorders and field mixers if you have a requirement for "super sound".

The hassles of double system are usually far more annoying than they're worth. I record single-system whenever possible. The recording in the AF100 is fine, especially for dialogue; if you're recording a symphony, use an external 24-bit recorder, but for dialogue the AF100's more than enough. If you want cleaner pre-amps, you can use a small mixpre or something between the camera and the mics, which will give you cleaner sound but still have the efficiency of single-system.

The AF100 is broadcast quality audio if you set the audio format to LPCM as opposed to AC3 ( which is a Fraunhoffer-like encoder similar
to MP3 ).

Further, don't use the on-board microphones. Personally, I don't care for the on-board mic-pre's either .. so I use a MixPre pre-amp
and then go line-level into the AF100.

Mind that the AF100 will not record audio if in VFR mode .. even if VFR is set to 24 or 30 fps.

I usually run 3 lavs and a boom mic into a mixer, line out to camera mixing the lavs to one channel and the mic to the other. It's super clean. Sometimes I run will run the shotgun right into the camera or just a lav. It's a very flexible system. I notice a slightly higher noise floor direct into camera but it's pretty slight especially for a "live" audio situation.
