Newbie NLE question...

Howdy,
I am building a setup for editing. I have looked at FCP4 and Avid Express Pro w/ Mojo and prefer FCP. My question is what is the benefit of the hardware cards. With the mojo demo I saw the whole setup seemed faster. Do they just affect video performance or do they improve fx performance as well? If anyone has a link to more information on this kind of info it would be greatly appreciated.

Most modern CPUs can handle normal video themselves. Where these hardware cards come in is really in the fx department. They also aid in rendering speed.

Excellent, thanks for the info. I have a Dual G4 1ghz with 1.5GB Ram so I should have sufficient horsepower. Without an additional card.

Yep. You could edit on a much lower powered system and normal video would run without issue. For software based NLEs (without hardware assistance), render times are very much related to your computer's power (the faster the computer, the faster the render).
