Newbie needs some advise

Hey,

I have put together a short video for my local health club,
explaining a program that they offer,
and I am at a point that I am not sure what else it needs.
It's the first video that I am doing professionally for someone.
(albeit, I am not charging very much, but none the less, I am charging for it)
I shot the video with a DVX100B and edited it in FCP.
The manager of the club wrote the script and he wanted to do the voiceover work himself, so I was kind of limited.

It seems very boring and I need to somehow spice it up a bit.
I tried inserting background music from STP under some of the footage
and it seemed to distract from rather than enhance the video.
I am in desperate need of some input.
But,....
After looking at the samples and clips that are on this site,
I am a little embarrassed to open it up for criticism.
cause the more I review it my self, the more amateurish it seems.

OK...OK...
after saying all of that...
here it is:

(I think I linked that correctly, if not please let me know)

Let me know what you think of the video,
and what I can do to fix it.

Thank you,

Todd

It's not bad man a bit bland but not bad. I'd redo your graphics and make them a little flashier and try to find some background music that won't be to distracting.

Well its a health club video so unless you get that Tony guy with his Gazelle I dont know how exciting it could be. LOL

You have to look at it from the viewer/customers perspective. From the filmmaker side I would try to spice of the graphics a little bit maybe make something cool in photoshop and add some cool flourishes, or even have people working out in the logo... just ideas.

From the customer side I think it is very well done, its informative and gives a lot of good information that is important, the length of the video is looooooooong. But that is your clients choice. If you could shorten some of the parts with the trainers it could be better.

Overall its well done and provides the viewer with a lot of information that will help make their decision an easier one.

Whew! I'm glad to see some of our colleagues echo my feelings that this is not a bad video. It does seem awfully long but when clients write their own scripts it can happen.
I'm a real fan of sound and I think a good music track would help a lot. A pre-screening of the original Jaws bombed mainly because John Williams' glorious soundtrack wasn't added in yet. The underwater scenes with the real shark weren't cut in yet either but I still say it was for the lack of music.

Thanx for the input

Thanx for the input

Thank you very much for the encouraging words.
I totally agree with all that has been said so far...
the length of the video, some type of background music,
more interesting (flashier graphics), etc.

I am kind of limited with the length of the script, cause that is what they wanted.
But when I give it to them on DVD,
I am going to break it up with chapter marker (for easier screening/skipping),
and also give them a shortened version without the trainers section.
(They are planning on using each trainer video clip on their website anyway)

As far as the background music goes..
any suggestions for the type of music???
Cause I was trying to put some things together in STP,
and everything that I came up with was a little distracting.
(I have found that I am definitely not a composer so any suggestions would be appreciated)

I realize that this is an informational video for a health club and it isn't gonna win
me any awards, but I am trying to put something together that I can kind of be proud of. If I could only get a shot of a shark eating Tony "the Gazele Guy" then maybe I would have something.

Thanks again for taking the time to look at my project,
and please keep the comments coming.
Cause the path to improvement is achieved by listening to the people that have walked the roads before me.

Todd

YEAH Tony!

The music wasnt that bad, just get a bunch of mellow tracks together and pick one. Or post them hear and we will give opinions.

i would say if you can go back and shoot some more takes of them saying the same thing so that way you can have a multiacam effect cut to close ups and such that would make the clips not feel as long i think
