Re: Newbie needs sign off on sound gear

I think it's all about who you talk to. Most companies like that will have at least a few people that know what they are talking about. I can say that everytime I have called them, they didn't know what I was talking about, or were unwilling to help. AND, everytime you call, you don't know who you are going to get. The cool thing with the smaller ma and pa shops is you know you are going to talk to the same person every time, and you know what that person knows, and they know you. I will say that I have seen B&H sell things on the cheaper side. They do this because they buy such high volume. Which can be good and bad. Good if you know exactly what you want, and don't need any help. Bad if you are new to things, and need someone to hold your hand and walk you through your setup, which all of the smaller ma and pa shops will do. If you're in the NY area, and want to buy locally, check out Gotham Sound. I know those guys, and they are really good guys, and know their stuff. In the midwest you have Trew Audio. Again, I know those folks, and they are a great shop. Out here in L.A. you have Coffey Sound and Location Sound. Same thing as the other folks. Coffey is a little smaller than Location, but very good. So, your covered all across the country. I know there are other places I don't know about that sell stuff as well. I encourage my customers to shop around and find the company they are most comfortable with. You need to have a place you know you can go to and trust that they will give you the right advice and the best prices they can.

Also, the BH site is a terriffic resource.

And Oleg, I'd doubt they would have any problems selling to Israel... ;) Well except on saturdays... ;D
They have excellent relations with Brazil too, as well as nice portuguese-speaking salespeople... Still not as good as EVS... But they lack the audio variety as the specialized stores...

Re: Newbie needs sign off on sound gear

J Barnes has the most truthful post up there... says it all really.

I never said B&H was HIGH... they are often the cheapest on things and they are always competitive... but MANY times it's NO MORE to buy from Trew or Coffey. Many K-Tek poles are $30 or MORE cheaper from Trew or Coffey. K-Tek mount... same price... Softies? $13 cheaper at Trew.

It just depends on the item.

The one thing I've found when dealing with Coffey, Trew, or Location Sound is a level of service that smokes B&H... ALWAYS friendly and ALWAYS knowledgeable.

I bought a Lectro set from Location Sound... they accidentally delayed my shipment for 2 days... to make up for it? Box of 12 Duracell Pro-Cells and a short XLR... no charge!

Rycote Softie questions? John Coffey (owner) calls me personally.

Sanken issues? Glenn Trew (owner) calls me personally.

Imagine calling B&H and leaving a question about a product... Hell if you don't have the actual item number READY when the guy asks for it he overflows with attitude! I know... I've bought THOUSANDS of dollars worth of stuff from those guys! Like nearly $5K.

I love the B&H website... and I'll continue to buy stuff there... there's a TON of stuff they have that nobody else has!

All I'm saying is the little shops owned and operated by ACTUAL working professionals are often the SAME price and those little shops really care about getting you the best item for your needs. Plus... if I order something from Trew I get it the very next day. B&H doesn't even process my order for 2 days and I get the item usually in 6-7 days.

Re: Newbie needs sign off on sound gear

you know jews -we have one god  we trust :-)
the b@h  have exelent reputation to stand behind the product they sell after they sold it and thats worth  for me  more then if they know exactly what is the difference between the toaster and microwave , i do my reserch and come ready  , my expirience with b@h is on the video and photograpy side  not on the audio side , from this expirience i can say that i had almost complite unswers on things that i had not have  all information ( and of course i did a double check for that)
for someone who new to any aria  the specialized store could be a benefit
and that whorth few bucks more -

Re: Newbie needs sign off on sound gear

B&H offers the best POST purchase help, my DVX is from BH and for some reason I had to get a new one, took it in and 5 mins later I walked out with a new one.

All I am saying is that THE guys I have asked questons there, didn't know the answers..

best example I have, I asked to see the LEctro 411 and he handed me the shure sony (gray plastic) system.. and so many other things..

I guess I will just keep my coments to myself..

BTW, I sold 2 lectros already, if anyone is interested on 2 187 systems with a 150 and a 119, let me know, also a M4

Re: Newbie needs sign off on sound gear

I freaking hate the wise-ass salesmen you get at B&H sometimes. Yeah, I understand they are in NYC but still I don't need that. I take my biz elswhere.

Re: Newbie needs sign off on sound gear

Matt, this is Chris,(i just decided to join istead of being a guest)

Make me an offer for the 187's I have 2, but I have to wait on selling them for a bit because I'm in the middle of production and as soon as I get back from Az. I start another one that should be wraped by the 22nd..
if the 201 or 211 that I bought comes in, I will let you know..

Cheers..
