Newbie Needs Help!

Hi, I'm new here because I just got a 100A for Christmas, as well as Avid. Anyway, I've shot some stuff and tried to capture it to Avid to work with and it won't let me.

Avid says there is no input and that the tape or deck is turned off. This is probably simple to fix but I have tried to no avail.

I'm working on a laptop: 2gigahertz, 400 megs ram, 200 gigs hd, windows xp home edition. I have Avid xpress pro v4.0

I connect the dvx to my computer via firewire, I have a pci firewire card in my laptop. I turn on the dvx, switch to vcr mode, put in the tape, i then turn on avid, go to capture tool, and it doesn't work.

I've gone into settings -> deck configuration and manually selected the channel and deck as firewire & dvx100p

Still, no luck. Please help a newbie out I would really appreciate it!

Re: Newbie Needs Help!

First of all, XPress Pro is not supported on XP Home edition, it is qualified for XP Professional. ALso, the CPU itself is a bit weak for video editing.. these days a P4 3.x and at least a gig of RAM is the basic setup for any kind of performance.

Also, what is the brand of the FireWire card? Avid qualified the Pyro brand.

When attaching the camera to the CPU (without Xpro running) does the OS recognize that a device is attached? If not, then the problem solving needs to start there.

Let me know if you get that far and we can ake it from there.

Re: Newbie Needs Help!

I'm not sure what brand the firewire card is - it says 'Cables to Go' and also 'Port Authority 2', those are the only names.

The OS does recognize that the device is attached. I've been able to capture the video using microsoft's movie maker - but I of course would rather use Avid.

Thanks for your help...

Re: Newbie Needs Help!

If the OS sees it, then the next step is to get the Avid software to recoginize it... no gaurantees since you are running on a lot of hardware and OS that is not qualified....

Go to deck configuration and delete all channels. Make sure the camera is already attached and in VCR mode before launching Xpro.

DO not let the software autodetect the deck. The DVX100 does not delcare itself as such overt the FireWire. You need to set the camera type up by hand. Select Panasonic, then the AG-DVX100p.
Click apply then save. Go to Capture mode.

Perhaps you have tried this, but try it again and report back.

Re: Newbie Needs Help!

Okay, I followed your instructions by the letter and had no luck.

Avid still can't see the tape. It says there is no imput etc - says messages I got in my initial post.

I hope it isn't that my computer can't run it - because I have no money for a new one. However, just because the computer is slow/old I would still think Avid could capture the video, if only poorly.

I can't think of any more information that would be usefull for figureing out this problem but all you have to do is ask for it. Again, thanks for your (continued) help....

Re: Newbie Needs Help!

I would start by getting a new firewire card. Avid seems to have a preference for very cheap stuff. For instance, I was originally trying to use the firewire from my old DV500 card and it wouldnt recognize it. Also, with my sound card, I bought a really nice 24bit I/O card that had XLR & 1/4" inputs on it that Avid also wouldnt take. So I go out and buy a SIIG firewire card and a Sound Blaster audiocard for a total of about 50 bucks that they work seamlessly. So I would try changing some of that stuff...which may be a little difficult on a laptop. But on thing is for sure, you need to double your RAM at least.

Re: Newbie Needs Help!

Have you solved your problem? Something similar happened to me once. Turning the camera off and on and using "Check decks" did the trick. But I believe you've tried this. Is there anything new about it?

Re: Newbie Needs Help!

No, it hasn't been solved yet. I have a better (avid approved) firewire card on the way. And tomorrow I am going to upgrade my laptop with some more RAM.

After that I don't know what else to do. If anybody as any suggestions please post them. I'm kinda stuck here...
