Newbie in Forum--Researching AF100 and Prime Lenses?

I recently sold my XL-h1s and am looking at the AG-af100 to replace it. I am new to Panasonic cameras overall and am new to the micro 4/3 sensor size as well. I was wondering if choosing a Canon L series 24 mm 1.4f lens would be fast enough and small enough to be equivalent to a 50mm look (on a full sized sensor) in front of the 4/3 sensor? I plan to shoot a low budget horror film and am trying to get a camera/lens combination that yields a cinematic look--well as close as I can for $5-7K.

I am also researching the adapter by Birger Engineering as it appears (through some of the great information on this forum!) I will need it for the L series lenses? If the Birger adapter is not available, then should I purchase a Lumix lens and invest in L glass? or...

Thanks for everyone's patience and I appreciate all of the time folks have spent documenting what they know about the AF100!

Don't wanna leave you hanging...
A thorough search through both AF and GH threads will give you all the answers you seek. It's much easier to ask questions of knowledge reinforcement rather than those of acquisition round these parts...

That 24/1.4 would be incredibly fast, and would provide a field of view a tiny bit wider than a 50mm on a full-frame stills camera.

As for the Birger -- we haven't heard any updates, so it's at a bare minimum of two weeks away. Birger last said that he'd make an update when it was within a couple of weeks of shipping, so ... it's at least two weeks, maybe (probably) more. Could be a month, could be three months, we just don't know; no date has been given. So don't make a plan based on using an unreleased product because there's simply no way to know whether it'll be released or not.

For a lot less than the cost of the 24/1.4, you could get the Voigtlander 25mm f/0.95, and have a lens that works with the AF100 perfectly, doesn't need an adapter of any type, has luxuriously better manual focusing, and costs hundreds of dollars less, and is a stop faster than the Canon lens.

Thanks so much for taking the time to reply to my questions! I will look at the Voigtlander. I have been reading on the cropping debate on the AF-100. If I bought a 24mm or 25mm, should I be concerned with vignetting?

Thanks again for all of your help!

Brian

There will be no vignetting whatsoever.

You won't lose any functionality as far as the camera's onboard metering tools (waveform, iris meter, zebras, etc). You wouldn't have any capability for automatic iris though, as the Voigtlander is a strictly manual lens and the only way to control the iris is with the iris ring on the lens.

The fast lumix pancake primes are very good. I have the 14mm and 20mm and like them on both on the GH2 as well.
