NEW Zacuto Z-Finder EVF

Is it just me or is it actually a better idea to buy a smallHD DP6 and mount a Z-finder frame onto the acrylic screen protector. You only pay around $100 more and you end up with a nice monitor and EVF instead of just a 3.2" monitor.

You would lose just under half of your image by doing that.

This is pretty good, right?

Problem with the Redrock is it limits the viewing to one individual, and keeping your eye up against a viewfinder is not always feasible. I have actually been speaking with some manufacturers lately (specifically Ikan) about why they couldn't just snag a panel from a Sony EX3 and throw it into an enclosure and add HDMI. I don't need anything larger than the 3" LCD on the camera, I just want to be able to move it around where I want. Guess I either buy one of these, or sell my 7D and buy a 60D.

Viewfinder weeks in Cinema Land - an other option:

3.2inch LCD display (800 x 480 pixels)
Attachable optical loupe
HDMI analog input
HDMI loop-out function
Peaking & Saturation

Apparently around £600 for the loop-through and £450 without.

Why is everyone freaking out on the price? Its Zacuto! Have you ever bought a "cheap" Zacuto part? That was expected...

I think this is all pretty awesome and look forward to more companies making EVFs. I want to purchase an EVF for my 5D setup. If someone can make one that is 3G - HD-SDI/hdmi/component, I'm totally sold.

For those of us who now have DSLR rigs and are migrating to the AF-100, it would be a great option to leverage both pieces of gear.

Also, being that the AF-100s viewfinder is FIXED, it would be nice to have this on an arm so you could place it wherever you want.

It makes no sense for a company like Zacuto to make an entire EVF from the ground up, when they already have their Zfinder in production, and is a tried and tested and popular product.

If they started from scratch, they would effectively be making another part, which means new designs, new moulds, new everything and this would cost 10x more and take 10x longer than building off existing technology and using their Zfinder and building a small monitor for it.

You could argue that the Zfinder straight on the back of the 5D is an EVF, its a viewfinder that is not optical, it shows an electronically generated image. All Zacuto have done is allow you to move the monitor somewhere more convenient, and use the Z finder as normal.

You may feel pissed off having to buy the monitor and a Zfinder but if you already had a Zfinder and had to buy a complete new unit, you would moan and complain even more. Similarly, if you bought an all in one EVF from Zacuto and then wanted to go Run n Gun you would have to buy a Zfinder as well and we all know how many people would ***** and moan about that on the forum.

What Zacuto has effectively done in this product is allow you to be truly free with how you use the setup, you can use the Zfinder on the camera as usual, or on the monitor. You can quickly pop the Zfinder off the monitor whilst shooting so everyone else can see what is going on, and if you already own a Zfinder (as many many people out there do) then all you have to buy is the monitor.

Theres no sense re inventing the wheel here, Zacuto already has a working viewfinder option, all they are doing is offering you more ways to configure and use your system by offering an EVF that uses the existing viewfinder.

It's already been well talked about on "other" forums that Zacuto's new EVF finder is actually a damage control mockup trying to take away some of the Redrock EVF thunder.

Zacuto was caught off guard without a competing product ready to show when Redrock demo'd their finder.
I mean a $700.00 EVF, that you have to spend another $300.00+ for to get the eyepiece just to make it an actual EVF, not just a really really small monitor....
$1000.00+, I don't think so, especially when it's so bulky.

A few things Zacuto has going for it:

- False color and peaking.... Hasn't been announced on the Red Rock.
- For those that already have z finders, it might make more sense to them compared to those that don't

Edit: apparently the red rock has hdmi passthrough now

an external monitor with higher resolution and much greater size can be had for much less.

ill pass.

Resolution vs Pixel Density

Resolution vs Pixel Density

I

By the way, DPI of both Z-EVF and SmallHD are nearly identical. According to my calculations, the Z-EVF's pixel density comes to around 288 dpi (or ppi, whatever) and the SmallHD is 270 dpi. So you're actually not losing much resolution at all.

I

Did you mean "resolution" or pixel density. The DP6 is 1280x800, so it has about 3x the resolution, (the total number of visible pixels). However, it does have a lower pixel density as per your calculations. Sorry to butt in...
