NEW Zacuto Z-Finder EVF

HAHAHAHAHAHA 800 x 480. That's actually a perfectly workable resolution but can't come close to other EVFs (RedRock, built in one on GH and AF100 cameras) Wanna take bets on how much this is gonna cost, given that the Z-finder itself is already $400 and features no electronic parts? Wow.

HAHAHAHAHAHA 800 x 480.
Actually that's probably the same res as the Redrock. Redrock claims 1.2 million "dots", and 800 x 480 x 3 (R, G, B) = 1.15 million dots. Maybe the Redrock's 848x480? That multiplies out to 1.22 million. In either case, I doubt there's much difference between them.

That's why I asked Redrock the question - are they talking about actual resolved pixel resolution? Or the total number of red, green, and blue "sub-pixels" on the panel?

I wonder if there's a pixel-to-pixel mode on either one - the Zacuto, or the Redrock? If there is, heck, that's almost worth it right there.

it's not the point in pixels... why would you buy PHOTOGRAPHY camera for 'cheap' and then still buy tripod, monitor, lenses, matte box, filters, sound gear, in one word EVERYTHING the same as you would with proper camera and then get crippled 5dmk2 video? jeez... short minded thinking... even with af101... you pay 5k for the camera, and then have to pay 5k for the recorder, to have proper recording format... 10k, there's your 'cheap' solution for shallow dof.

Because you'd need all of that stuff with pro equipment anyway, at least for narrative work! Most films I've worked on used an external audio recorder attached to the boom mic, used a tripod, used a monitor, etc...whether they were shooting with traditional pro video equipment or with DSLRs.

Your math is somewhat off, I have a GH1, lenses, audio recorder, tripod, support rig, monitor, etc...all for less than my friend bought his used HVX for (and he got an amazing deal) not to mention the HVX plus the Letus, lenses, monitor, support system, mattebox, etc, that he got for it. He shoots most of his stuff naked 5D now.

of course, it all depends on what you're buying... you can buy Panasonic monitor, you can buy small hd... the main idea remains the same, it's not cheap to shoot quality work with HDSLR, you still have to buy lots of extras and the camera does not become the most expensive thing anyway... it's just a way to fool people into thinking, camera is cheap, great.. and only then they discover they still need everything else, the same as with any other camera...

Zacuto 800 x 480 x 3 = 1,152,000 dots [source]
Panasonic GH2 LCD = 460,000 dots [source]
Panasonic GH2 EVF = 1,534K dots eq.
Panasonic AF100 = 921,000 dot [source]
Canon 7D LCD = 920,000 dots [source]
Canon 550D LCD = 720 x 480 x 3 = 1,036,800 dots [source]
Samsung Galaxy S OLED = 800 x 480 x 4 = 1,536,000 dots [source]

Ben_B, am I missing something here? Or are you comparing the 3" LCD of zacuto GH2's tiny sub 1" EVF and not the LCD?
Either way, you are WRONG.

Learn to compare apples to oranges. BTW, its arrogant of you to laugh and assume you are correct in your statement.

--------------------------------
When comparing pixels of different size screen, it makes more sense to compare based on 'pixel density' (PPI = pixel per inch)
List of screens http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_displays_by_pixel_density
A display device has a limited number of pixels it can display, and a limited space over which to display them. On a small portable computer or cell phone, a higher pixel density is desirable, as these devices are designed to be viewed up close.
HOWEVER, for filmmakers, it makes more sense to compare 'effective pixel' since not all LCD screen are in the 16:9 ratio (ie 7D)

Point well taken..mainly meant to put a comma in there. I use an HDMI monitor that's 800 x 480 and it works great...I've had posts in the past about how super high res monitors aren't really necessary. In any case, my hahahahaha was more directed at the price, etc. If you read my post I start by laughing but then say "That's actually a perfectly workable resolution." In any case, yes, you're right, it's basically the same as everything else...and at this point you're paying for pixel density.

This is a huge FAIL.

So, basically it's $800 for a tiny LCD, and then I have to pay around $400 for a Zfinder? Yeah. Good joke guys. Best of luck with this garbage.

February 2011 is a bit late to the game. By then we will have moved beyond the use of DSLR's and will have more choices for video cameras with larger sensors and larger, high-res monitors. I like the idea, but I would have to see how the monitor is going to look considering the HDMI out from the 5D 7D is not full res when recording.

Is it just me or is it actually a better idea to buy a smallHD DP6 and mount a Z-finder frame onto the acrylic screen protector. You only pay around $100 more and you end up with a nice monitor and EVF instead of just a 3.2" monitor.

By the way, DPI of both Z-EVF and SmallHD are nearly identical. According to my calculations, the Z-EVF's pixel density comes to around 288 dpi (or ppi, whatever) and the SmallHD is 270 dpi. So you're actually not losing much resolution at all.

I will admit to one thing that the Z-EVF has over the Redrock is the HDMI doubler/pass-thru. Also the fact that you do end up with 3 modes of using it. Classic Z-finder, EVF, 3.2" monitor only. And it appears to run off of more standard 12v so if you're on an A/B or v-lock system, it makes some kind of sense.

Still, at $800, it's just not appealing to me. SmallHD + Z-finder FTW!
