New York Film Academy

Re: New York Film Academy

Thanks for all the post people. I have decided to invest that $, into a new G5 w/ all the works. Then I'm going to shoot, shoot, shoot!

Thanks again.

Re: New York Film Academy

Also, I heard the equipment is older than their bad reputation. I also dodged a bullet and decided to buy a DVX w/ the money I was going to spend on the 8 week course. Really Really good choice!

Re: New York Film Academy

I think they've got a bunch of DVX's now. They were stocked full of Arri S and PD-150's.

The equipment isn't bad, but equipment doesn't teach you very much. To get the most out of any education, you need inspired and gifted teachers and an environment where you can explore the knowledge as it's emparted to you.

They get the joke rep because they spend as much time "marketing" to their students as they do teaching them. They want you to think that you're getting a full film education that will allow you to walk out and direct or camera operate on a pro shoot. They want you to think that they've got the back door into a career when nothing could be further from the truth.

The graduates tend to come out thinking that something is owed to them, but they have extremely lopsided knowledge which can include vast gaps and downright inaccuracies.

If we were talking about cutting hair, NYFA would be the Hackensak Community Cosmotology School, but their graduates all come out thinking they can work at a Madison Avenue salon.

I saw one film festival that specifically bans entries from NYFA alumni who have graduated in the past two years. They were getting flooded by terrible NYFA films so they had to put a ban in place. That tells you a lot.

Wow - That DOES say a lot!

Re: New York Film Academy

I was thinking about film education just the other day (mostly about how I'm way too old to be going back to school of any kind) and it occurred to me that individual instruction might be a way to go. I know Walter Graff offers this and I was wondering how many other seasoned pros could offer private tutoring, where you could more or less design your own course (Dakotapod, note spelling).

Re: New York Film Academy

I went to the NYFA for 4 weeks. tried it. intense, lots of info, they show you an alumni's film to teach us a lesson I thought his film was pretty crappy.
the lighting class was a joke as the guy who was teaching was pretty much asking us to guess what he's thinking.
the only class I did like was directing class- the guy was a nobody but at least he had a sense of humor and told us that most of us probably will never make it in this business. Maybe he was one of them. i dunno.
All I got out of it was the connection to the actors that I met who I think were pretty talented that went onto study further at New School- not the best I guess but anyhow, it's New York.

for trying out for 4 week, I came out even more determined that I need to do this by myself-technically I learned nothing there as I helped all my fellow students edit their films on FCP and got the FCP tutors angry.
the 16mm was a joke. and a hassle... you learn to love digital even more after that.
that's all just IMHO.
