Hello all,

I am looking for some info on the New York Film Academy. I'm looking into attending the school for dv filmmaking. Any pros and cons? Any advice would help.

Thanks.

Re: New York Film Academy

I would suggest spending that money on a DVX100-A and Vegas 5 and spending every waking moment at this site. :D

Re: New York Film Academy

Yea I was kind of thinking of doing that. I have been reading and posting on this site and mvwire.com. Ive learned alot just from reading from the sites. Oh yea, Im getting my dvx100a next month. I am also the kind of (do it yourself) type of person. Thanks for the advice!

Re: New York Film Academy

Of coarse there is an argument on both sides. Some might recommend school.

BUT my thoughts...

If you have a DVX coming next month why not take the first semester off and instead of going to school everyday, make some movies. You are in Texas so that would mean moving and residing in New York while at school. This is of coarse expensive. Take that money and the cost of a semester in school and go make flicks full time and see what you think then. If you feel you still want / need school (which is cool)  go and all you have lost is one semester of time AND you have spent that time as a filmmaker and that can only help with the school. You may find that school is not needed and want to just keep rocking your own way too.

Re: New York Film Academy

For some people it's not that easy though. I'm going to film school on student loans. So, I couldn't just use that money to buy equipment and shoot movies. I'm using there stuff to shoot movies. I came to film school for connections and have made alot already. I've worked on lots of films too. I didn't have that oppurtunity in where I used to live. That's just my 2 cents.

It's all about the financial aid!

I'm getting considerably over 20 grand a year, I think.

Of course, I'm not attending a real film school (and I don't even know if I'll get accepted into the film studies major.)

How? What? Where?

Re: New York Film Academy

Wow I got close to nothing for financial aid. I do get the Montgomery G.I. bill, cause I just got out of the Air Force. I go to the Savannah College of Art and Design. www.scad.edu It's an arts school but they have great film and 3-D animation programs and a great film festival every year. Roger Ebert was here this year. He gave a 3-day workshop on citizen kane.

Re: New York Film Academy

We are pretty production based here at SCAD. I'm taking my first 2 film classes next semester and you make 2 productions in each of those classes. It's just gonna suck to have to use the GL-1's in intro to video while I own a dvx >:(

Re: New York Film Academy

I've heard good and bad about NYFA. They have one at Universal Studios in Ca. I heard that it pretty much boils down to the teachers you get. If you have a good teacher, it will be well worth your time. They also offer 8 week programs etc, so you can "feel" it out but then again I can think of better ways to spend 9000.00 dollars then on an eight week program and taking a chance of having a shitty teacher. My .02

Re: New York Film Academy

As John said, school is one thing...the NYFA is another.

Check into the alumni, check into any awards the students have won. A gear list is great when looking at a school, but unless the gear is teaching you what you want to know...you may want to take a serious look at the instructors.

NYFA is largely a joke in the professional film world of New York. You'll see pizza delivery men wearing NYFA jackets. Guys working in porn shops wearing the NYFA tee shirt. Step on a professional set and you won't see a single NYFA tee shirt.

When I was in my interview with the DGA board of trustees, I made a little joke about the NYFA, you should have seen them all laugh and look at each other knowingly.

You can get anything you want out of a school if you really try...but you'd be much better off going to almost ANY other school in the country.

Try looking at the International Film and Television Workshops. They're certainly not cheaper, but they actually have REAL instructors from the industry.

Re: New York Film Academy

I went to RockPort a few times. Once in 88 and 90. The instructors were great. V.Zigmound (spelling) taught advance lighting. Also, the other students bring a lot to the table. Well worth it.

Re: New York Film Academy

I took a lighting class at rockport and in the class we had a famous japanese commercial director, to a music video director, the son of a powerful Balliwood producer, and the special effects cinematogrpher for ID4, Godzilla and a mess of other films.

Those were my fellow students, not the instructors...so I tend to hold Rockport in a higher level of respect then most other down and dirty film schools.

Re: New York Film Academy

for example, their next DP master class is being taught by Michael Chapman, cinematographer for Raging Bull and Taxi Driver.

Re: New York Film Academy

another option...

become a PA. get on some shows, learn, meet people..one thing leads to another, and your getting coffee for some producer and he takes a liking to you and makes you his assistant...then starts getting you short ends on all the movies you work on. all the while your learning about film making from film makers. and saving for a dvx...then you can show the producer guy some stuff and he will think its cool and try to help you out....

ive seen it happen...its cliche...but it ****in works!

unless your a bad PA. i have seen that too and its pretty sad. all those hopes and dreams, that will never come to fruition cause you cant get to work on time. stupid.

anyway, good luck with it all...

Re: New York Film Academy

Man. I seriously came pretty bloody close to going to NYFA a couple years ago. The marketing and coarse outlines looked pretty good. Only thing that held me back was the cost of living in New York. Still have all the info. Looked into many schools and not counting the big schools they seemed to be the one.

Guess I dodged a land mine there!  :o

Just curious - What is it that makes them so bad? What is it that gives them such a joke rep?
