New York City DVX user meeting

Well it sounds like we're putting together a small army. I agree with Aram, it might be a pipe dream to do a project. That's why I was thinking of doing something REALLY small that we could complete in a day like a 30 second spot (or a few different ones if there's a good turnout) but even that I can see being difficult. Dammit this is just like college. :) I just want to see if there's something that will really give people the initiative to come, and come back. It might be better to wait to do a project until there's some kind of coherent group. Does anyone know of any other regions that have functioning groups? What the hell do they do? So far Coffee and Aram (I think) are the only ones that have said they've tried this before (and they have the most posts). Perhaps one of them would like to be the primary decision maker....or FlintMI cuz he brought up the idea for a meeting and offered his place. It's kind of hard to pick a leader when we're all just posts and we have to wait for responses. But I think we need to have someone otherwise it'll never get off the ground. Let me know if you guys agree.

For the record I have absolutely NO problem with Walter coming. I think he'd be a great addition to the group.

makes me so mad, lol, i typed a long response but this damn slooooooooow server crap didn't take my post... oh well, screw it. lol

I thought that happened with my last post, but then after I wrote another one about how ****ing annoying this server **** is, my post appeared:) So I quietly removed my angry recap. How can we be expected to get anything done in this climate? It feels like '92 up in this *****:) I'm really not that pissed, I just hope we get back some speed SOON!

I am glad Aram and everyone else posing here is interested, I mentioned Aram, because I had the pleasure of meeting him in the first meeting and was very mature about the entire thing. I have a contact at B&H with the Sales and Marketing Dept, who offered me a space a B&H for regular meetings. People, what do you think? Would meeting at B&H be a good idea as a regular spot. I believe they can provide us with a screen and projector.

My suggestion is for someone here to officially take the responsibility to lead and organize the group, The Group Director, and recognize that person with such responsibility by every in here. I think that by doing that, we can eliminate the "many chiefs" issue and previous experiences' problem when it come to networking at this range.

What are you thoughts on that? Any volunteer who wants to lead the group?

PS: I forgot to say, my solution to avoid loosing my long post (which has happened) due to server or conection errors is to always copy what I type.

Yup, I agree to copy a post so it won't be loss. Ok. There's some great suggestions here, but the most important thing I feel is someone to lead this group. We really do need a leader or else there might be confusement.

So how do we pick who to lead? Well the obvious choice is the guy who started this Thread, but from the looks of things he doesn't check in that often. My second choice would be the one with the most experience and from reading it seems Coffee would be a good choice. And Hybrid seems to have his head on his shoulders also.. man, tough decision.

How about if we pick someone the old fashion way. Vote. Each of us give a vote and the one with the most vote lead. Or else will be deciding 4 ever what to do.

Roman, a meeting at B&H is what I think we all would agree is excellent. If you can make it happen do it.

Ok. my vote for the person to lead is... Hybridcreations

Based on hybridcreations's post I can tell his concerns and interest for this club to succeed. Hybridcreations are you up for the task? If you do, you have my vote.

Folks, Just joined this group. I am also a very new DVX100B owner. Have been thinking about making movies for a long time and finally made the first tentetive step. I live in NJ and would love to hangout with like minded folks.
I am also interested in bouncing ideas about possible documentary film ideas. Hope to hear from the group soon.

Cheers,

-Krish

meetup!!

meetup!!

hey everyone, DVXuser.com has been hosed from my vantage point and has prevented me from checking in very often. I'm also in production on one of my films now so gettin' to the computer ain't easy. my apologies.

you're right about a group leader, but I think we should elect one in the company of everyone who actually shows up and pick that way. for now, since it was my thread, lemme run just this first one, get everyone together, and go from there. I have no ego on this stuff whatsoever, but NYC/NJ meetups were apparently not working out so I gave it a kick in the butt! :)

B&H tour with a meetup at my house to watch some films sounds like it has a pretty large consensus. even if you've been to B&H a million times its a good place to start this kinda thing.

the addition of Walter Graff is more than I ever expected. We are filmmakers so the DVX/HVX is certainly a focus but is just the catalyst for a larger filmmakers group. I doubt we'll run out of things to say.

since a message board is very fragmented way of communicating, if y'all could send me your email address and first name, I will move this discussion offline to the core group of people interested. we can throw out a few dates, pick one and a time, and make this happen in early March, 'cause right now the snow is a pain in the neck.

please send your RSVP for the NYC DVX user group to:

Thanks.

Shawn,

Thats great you stepped up with some initiatives. Since you are willing to take the lead on getting the ball rolling, I think it will be great to have a formal introduction of yourself to the group. This should be a good ice breaker and make us all more comfortable on regards of networking among each other. After-all, we are all strangers to some extent.

In my humble opinion, for a first meeting, I think we should limit it at a public place, get to know everyone's personalities, purpose and expectation for joining the group. I say this, because of the first meeting, we were all delighted about the group, but, we all had such distinctive background that I am sure if we have met under any-other circumstances at least two or three would have been very uncomfortable in an unesessary hostile situation.

If the group here are conformable with you to leading the first meeting (noticed some other member opted to pic someone in particular) then please take my comment into consideration. I will send you my RSVP anyways after this post.

Cheers to all, and looking forward to sharing a productive and creative year will all you.

Roman

Hey guys,
Finally got through! Although I appreciate the vote of confidence from a couple of you, I agree with Shawn that we can't really pick a leader until we see who comes. I'm glad he's taken the initiative to get us to that point. Hell, we could have a couple people with a lot of ideas and I don't think we need to set up an unnecessary power struggle. I also tend to agree with Roman that it'd be good to meet at a public place, nobody's turf so to speak. Roman, was it you that said you could get a room at B&H with a projector? That sounds perfect. We could take the tour that Flint can set up and then meet there and decide how to move forward. I think the most important thing will be to guage where everyone's interests lie, and then figure out a way to cultivate those interests.

OK so lots of good stuff here, and I got several RSVPs so the countdown to B&H begins! I am working with Roman to get a date for B&H and then will announce here and send out an email to the RSVP list as well. cover all bases.

Hope this meets with everyone's expectations.

let it snow let it snow let it snow...

Alright!

So here is the deal, I have not contact B&H as of yet for the following reason. 1) we are not a established group yet and the space offered was for a monthly meeting basis for an established group. 2) We have not agreed as to were to and for-which specific reasons we are meeting (We are all till this point assuming to network and talk about indie filmmaking and the DVX). 3) There is not tentative date set forth, yet. 4) Any idea what the head count is so far? As you may understand, I should be prepare to answer simple question like these when I approach to them. As we get closer to defining the group, I will go ahead and make the move.

Question: What do you each expect out of this group? What do you visualize it running like?

I ask these because I believe we could have more productive 1st meeting if we get this off the chest now and spend more time getting to know each-other and our interest instead of spending must of the time trying to figure out what to do to please everyone.

Since I made the suggestion, I'd start by saying that I expect to: 1) have fun while learning new technical stuff for both cinematography and editing, (2) help and teach others as much as I can about cinematography and editing, (3) collaborate with everyone and make produce a project.

Hey Roman,
I believe Shawn (FlintMI) is putting together a list of interested people. Anybody who's interested should email him. And I think if we were to set an actual date that we could post it and probably get a couple more people to come, but then, of course, we need a location.

That said, I came up with a few ideas for meetings that I think would take it beyond just sitting around and talking. Let me know what you guys think of these....

-HVX200 expo
-Hollywood Camerawork viewing/discussion
-Lighting demos (Walter?)
-Sound demos (?)
-Editing demos
-Shooting challenge....Edit in camera exercise...go out and shoot 3-4 minutes of tape editing in camera. Compare.
-Or...mini-film festival...30 second spot, conceived, shot and edited in 12 hours
-How would you shoot this scene? (30 second scene, everyone does their own version, angles, focal lengths, movement, lighting, etc.)
-Video scavenger hunt?
-DIY buildoff
-Compression/output demo
-Scene-It

Also, every month at work, we have a photography critique session where people bring in their stuff and we all watch and critique. I think at the very least we could make something like this work but I'd love to see us doing some activities.
-Ryan

Should we make a post in the Cafe and see who else we can snag? I don't know how many people Shawn has gotten rsvp's from, but I keep seeing New Yorkers that haven't checked in here.
-Ryan

Great point Hybrid, I think we should post in the cafe to get more people. Since you brought it up I think you should post something on there when you get a chance. Because honestly I've been on DVX for a while now and I never go on this section of the site. I just decided to check it out one day, glad I did though

As of last night Shawn had 5 people aboard.

i really like the idea of a DIY build off aswell as the joint project. could a feature film ever possibly happen? that would be awesome but a little unrealistic...i'm just putting out there.,..
