New Year's Video

I'm shooting a new year's event at a nice indoor location(ballroom). I am basically looking for any tips to shoot such an event with lots of people and nice looking interiors. I am shooting on dv.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

thank you!

shoot lots of closeups interviews, like what are your resolutions, etc. a good camera mounted shotgun, and spider rig works good for this. however, avoid an on camera light, it irritates people close up. look for creative b-roll also (reflections in champagne glasses, interesting characters, live music?: closeups of the band)

similar to what I do for wedding receptions, not too different.

I'm curious what other folks come up with, too.

my rule of thumb for those kinds of things is; too much footage is like too much money, a good problem to have.

Dick is totally right about close ups. The wide shots can be temping "look at the pretty room" or "look how many people are here" but in the edit more than 3 or 4 of those and it is boring.

might want to show up early and get some exteriors and that is a good time to get the decorations and such...party hats that are neatly lined up on a table,

maybe a time-lapse of guest arriving if possible.

another tip for post: do you have any NewBlueFx plugins ? they work wonders on DV which is what i mostly shoot. i just got Video Essentials 3 (i have all the rest) and they have a plugin called spotlight that is awesome.

do you suggest i shoot on letterbox, or squeeze or 4:3?
nobody here has asked yet. what kind of client is it? and what have they asked you for? id imagine THEY would be the first people you should ask...

No i dont. what does the newbluefx plug ins do?

plugins are effects you can use on video to make it better looking. what is your editing software ??

nowadays i always shoot 16:9 unless the client wants something else. be sure to ask.

thanks for the advice. i'm gonna shoot 16:9
