New XDCAM EX music video released. Have a look!

Well, you DID ask for an opinion! Great talent, wonderful intercutting/edit, with lovely continuity, but good grief, this old guy is really turned off by all the phony film effects, ranging from scratches to improper film exposure ranging from over saturation to white level whipe out. Soo, this is obviously my own reaction, but what else do I have - given the total abominations out there, this may well be very mild and appeal to many others.

Soooooo, how do I really feel - I would have loved to have seen the camera work and the edit JUST as it was done - presents the couple obviously wonderfully in sync with each other so delightfully, BUT without all the garbage!

I just had the opportunity of reading the numerous comments of others on another forum, and as was the case with them, i did see that you had gone to a lot of creative work in adding those "retro" effects. My comments above reflect my conservative approach to edit effects, with generally the less the better. If in fact you were creating a flash back to an earlier time, ok, but obviously, from my comments, its just not my cup of tea. I must say, however, that I am most appreciative of the tedious (as well as artistic) effort it takes to provide smooth and coherent continuity with all those intercuts - and I must admit that I don't do much of that often or well!

Sorry, it doesn't work for me. The post effects are way over the top. THEY ARE SCREAMING AT ME! Effects are like spices, they are there to enhance not over power the main ingredient. If you serve me beef stew and all I can taste is the onion... That's what happened here. It was down right annoying, visually speaking.

I would really like to the see the same video without all the over-done post effects.

Hi,

Thanks for all the comments. Much appreciated.

The look is obviously a artistic choice, but I'm still learning - so keep it coming ;-)

cheers

I agree with the above comments...

Those post effects are way to harsh. Why not use them every once and a while, instead of throughout the whole thing?

Hi. Nice song.

I'd say too heavy on the Magic Bullet Looks. It's easy to go too far with those. I'd say you should try doing 2/3 of the video with a more natural looking "Look" then sprinkle in some fake film effects here and there, maybe near the cut points. It's like cooking: Salt is good. Too much salt will ruin the meal.

Maybe try "Color Reversal Old Style" or "Number 85" as starting points. Let the performance speak for itself. People like seeing the artists. Perhaps you could have the couple do a 2nd or 3rd lip sync at different locations, which will make more variation without relying on effects?

Just my suggestions. You're the artist. Just remember that it's for other people to enjoy too.

Peace

@Jay, honestly, a bit of both. I think anyone proud of their accomplishments should seek compliments as well as advice in acknowledgement of the fact, that there is someone better and you must humbly learn from them.

So, I take all input seriously. I'm still satisfied with my work, but I see your points. I'll have those in mind for future projects.

So again, thanks all.

i like effects but agree that this is waaaaaaay over the top. agree with chadfilsh that another location would have helped. after about 90 seconds i thought the location was worn out. anywhere away from the beach would have been a welcome break.

also i was struck at the girl bobbing up and down continually on 2 & 4 kind of became a preoccupation. moro so on the mid body and closer shots. it was distracting to me for such a smooth song.

nice song with a cool vibe and a good looking couple though.

i really dug your B&W video on your vimeo page though. beautiful images on much of it.

good luck.

In seeking criticism or praise, I've been tempted to throw you wise people a link from another production. 48 hours, no budget, friends friend etc.

What do you think about this one?

http://www.vimeo.com/11824239

I've seen this one before. It is far superior to the other one, with the over-the-top post effects. It shows more thought and restraint.

If I hadn't known, I would say they were done by two different people.

If you truly want to learn and improve, I would challenge you to tone down the post effects on the former video and be more selective in which effects and to what degree you use them, making certain there is a dramatic motivation for each.

Something to think about...

Just my 2 cents regarding the video on page 1 and only the part that doesn't please me:
The video gives a visual dissonance between the post effects and the original footage from the EX1. For me this is because the (still visible excellenct) quality and sharpness of the EX1 shines through a set of effects that is pasted upon technically good footage. I'd add more grain and remove sharpness and reduce the strenght of the applied effects to get a more authentic look, as a super 8 film would have.

Furthermore, the EX1 isn't the tool of choice for this type of intended look, it produces far too clean footage - a 7D with ISO 800 and a more shallow DOF would be IMO better.

Ok guys.

I got a lot of HEAT from my last music video, so I decided to do a new one.

This one, absolutely no budget, but help from friends and familiy.

Let me know what you think - Silas Holst - MY L.A.

FYI, I really read through your suggestions the last time - you know, friends and family are prone to please you. You guys are not, so even though you put a ton of work into it (at off hours), I still appreciate comments, positive as well as negative.

This project, I had to learn a ton of stuff. I used Adobe Premiere, After Effects, PfTrack and Cinema4d. Long hours, but I guess thats the only way to develop skills.

Hope you like it.

Oh, BTW, the video is shot on both Canon 7D and Sony XDCAM EX

Cheers,

Christian.
