Hi all,

I have redesigned my website and would like some feedback on the websites look and feel.

the sites in the HVX section only because I will be using my new HVX202EN pal camera for all the HD stock footage.

some of the links are still under construction.

re website opinion

re website opinion

Hi F

Would help the useability of the site if you:

1. Drop the entrance page - go straight to the mainpage
2. Keep any text on a black background white (or a very light colour) - the blues a bit to dark to be legible
3. Repeat the menu on every page so the user doesnt have to go back to the main page to select another link

You can do all that easily without changing the look and design of your site.

Keep up the good work.

AB

Thanks Ab

The idea about changing the text from blue to white is great, so Ive done that. I do want to keep my main entrance page as its my logo. The idea about adding the buttons to the links so people dont have to go back top the main page is exellent, didn't even think of that.

Any other ideas?

To be honest, I think it look completely amateur. I think if you want people to take you serious they are going to check you site. If you would like help, I am adjust my schedule and help you out. Free of charge. I am a graphic designer as well.

Off center alignment, Splash Page doesn't have any choices lke the point of a splash page. Site resolution is WAY way, The world is still at 800x600, I reccomend, creating new site, and if you are going to do the spalsh page than give 2 different resolutions and aso multiple languages.

Also in change your title for corret spelling, Opinions, not Appinions. I am lazy about using the spell check, but you have to make sure it is spelled right at least in the title.

This is corrective criticism, and a major marketing key if you want to be taken serious.

cheers

Here is what I came up with in about 15 mins. It is gernal, and moved away from the black. :)

Honestly, I would recommend taking SurJones' offer. I'm sure you're here for honest opinion, so hopefully I don't sound offensive, but the site reminds me of something whipped up in 1995 using a Front Page template. The giant buttons, the different font sizes, the starburst header and footer, the starbust rollover effect... it might benefit from some rethinking.

I would recommend spending some time looking at other web sites that you admire and take some thematic and stylistic ideas from them. Check out the big companies too like microsoft, adobe, panasonic, sony and such for ideas on font sizes, coherent/thematic design, navigation, etc...

Good luck!

I agree with what has been said. Take your image seriously. It is one of the first things that potential clients are going to see, and if you don't cause the right impression you might not get the job.

To start up with you need to get a proper corporate identity, or at least the basics of it, a nice logo and logotype, typefaces to use, corporate colors, etc. and use them consistently and coherently. the one you have at the moment is... well, just not good.

And then, once you have that, take it from there. As you can see at the moment, in Surjones sketch the bit using the moon and the type looks completely out of place... the logo is so bad that it is almost unusable...

Good luck with the redesigning, and i will be looking forward to see your improvements!!

I agree about dropping the intro page. Studies have been done that show a large percentage of visitors leave as soon as they see an intro page. I understand that you want to put your logo there but I think it does more damage then good.

I disagree about most of the world using 800x600 though. That seems to have changed in the past couple years. 1024x768 is the most common resolution now followed by 1280x1024. 800x600 is the 3rd most used. http://www.onestat.com/html/aboutus_pressbox43-screen-resolutions.html

Ditto to everything above.

Also, I don't even consider what you have there on the splash page to be much of a "logo". It is more like a font over a skyscape. Not going to look good on letterhead or envelopes. You need a better logo.

And yes, the site needs to be more sharp and asthetically pleasing. You don't want it to look like you made it yourself... especially if you plan on having a tutorial on Dreamweaver in your offering.

I only say all this to help... I may be a newbie with video... but I know websites. And, in its current state, your website isn't going to make you nearly as much money as it could!

Thanks guys and girls, :nads: Na kidden....

so much feedback. All relevant beleave me.

This is my first website, I updated from geocites. Im using yahoo site builder that comes free with subscription.

Im an adobe man so I use after effects and photoshop to make designs, the logo is a screen grab from my animated logo.

#I have now deleted the front page as stated by Justin O'Neill.

#The buttons do need some work, you'll notice the words are diffrent sizes. So i'll get to work on these soon.

#Logo, hmm I've grown attached to my logo however if you all think its lame ( trust me im hearinging it more and more ) then i'll have to redo it.

#Font size changing, ok i'll make it uniformal.

BUT! for the header, and footer of the main page.... I like it, I love the ILM website and made mime look almost the same.

Thanks guys
I might take you up on the help SurJones..... what should we start on first?

Oh and if anyone has a website and wants to add there webiste to my link page.... just email me.... no cost but only if you can do the same.

While we are on the subject... i did a little updating myself!

http://www.downeffect.com (and yes it has a SPLASH page, sorry.. haha)

anyways... check it out; i'm interested more in whether or not people understand the menu system than overall feedback. I very much enjoy the look of it regardless of other opinions... but crit is always nice i guess, so shoot away.

Kyle, I liked your site, Even though it is all flash :) I dont think you need a splash page, the point of it is to give people a choice to choice from. You can easly put that info on the top of the flash page. Also the site is not as big as the recommended. Also the movies are hard to find unless you feel click happy and decied to click the buttons, Maybe you can put Films Menu above or horizontal text. Other wise it is a nice simple site.

yea i guess the splash page isn't completely necessary. i like the idea of letting people know that it's flash. i'm not a huge fan of flash, but i liked the idea of working with it for once, just to see how it fairs in comparison to doing something without it. dementrovision is sorta stuck in there... i could make a quick link to the films section, although there isn't much to put there as of right now (which is another issue entirely, haha). i should also mention that the movie won best feature comedy at Shannon Rawls hollywood DV/HD festival. only problem is, anywhere i put it, it looks tacky! :(

the one nice thing i felt about flash was, there wouldn't be any problems with quicktime or windows media, since if you have flash 8 you can watch the movies as long as you have broadband. that was the main reason i started experimenting with it.

http://www.downeffect.com/mw/errol.mov (the only problem is, quicktime looks SO MUCH nicer :( )

the workflow of flash is interesting and is sometimes a lot of fun, that's one thing i came away with.

Personally I hate flash, Not to mention when surfing through Myspace, and all the videos and junk I keep my Java off, so If I went to your site I would not see anything. :) However as far as your clients, you just have to figure that they are lame and dont update their software. You'll have that one client that refusess to update their software. :) And HTML site will better help them,. OR just create a Spalsh page so they can choice Flash Based site or Conventional HTML site.

well, as of right now... downeffect really doesn't have a whole lot of potential for clients, but you are definitely right about that. i hold the same feelings about flash as you do. i'm not a fan. living in NYC though, anyone who looks at this site will have it. most of the people who are interested in what we are doing are other local artists and people who are interested in collaborating on personal projects. i get very frustrated when someone i want to show a clip to tells me they refuse to install quicktime because of itunes (PC guys) or when someone tells me windows media sucks (Mac doods).

that's one thing flash IS good for, it bridges that gap for the techno-snobs/geeks. which honestly are the only people that will end up looking at this site, as of right now.

that could change, and then i'll pursue making something with HTML.

I hate to chime in on this so late, but I'm looking for website templates because I want to update my site, and I landed upon this thread. Freudenberg I notice that it's 2 months later now and your site still looks amateur. Look into some sites where you can download templates and just customise them. Try www.allwebco.com, www.templatemonster.com and others. Just go to Google and enter web+template and see what you find. Like others have said, if people are not impressed with your site, they will likely not look into hiring you for whatever. Yahoo and others that offer free hosting also offer free templates. But they are also pretty simple and cheesy looking.

Anyway, think about it. While I'm here, anyone want to check out my site and critique it? I was thinking of going with an all flash site until I noticed others' comments here about people not updating their software or turning on java. GOOD POINTS! However, flash is so cool-looking that it's hard to resist. Anyway, any advice on this?

Surjones is the man. He said everything I would hope to contribute. So no "appinions" from this poster. :)

Edit: I now see this was a very old thread recently bumped. Opps. ah well.....Although Freudenburg Films asked for website help a couple months ago, his link still works and I do not know what it looked like back then, but it looks bad now..... So either he didn't fix it at all, or it still needs a lot of work.
