New Video

hey man... not bad for your first time... i felt your first shot was too dark though... the one where your talent is sitting in a chair... you gotta start out with your best shot compostion to win your crowd over... but overall for your first its pretty good... but before i give the praise... heres some quick suggestions that will help your production... knowing your camera is important... light... iris setting...etc... use that lens and get some shallow depth to help the look... and one i can't stress enough... COVERAGE IS KEY... get several camera set ups for one location ... medium shots... hand held... tight shots... side profile. this gives the production a BIG BOOST. it will help give great options in the editing phase... other than that... well done... my fav shot was when your talent was in the studio and as he pointed to the doorway you panned along... i didn't expect that... caught me off guard. good stuff though... keep it going.

Thanks, I did notice that the chair scene came out to dark. I just finished my 35mm adapter my lense should come today I can't wait to use it on the next shoot. Thanks again.

Ok..........

I like the locations you chose, but there are framing and lighting issues:

shot of him in chair: too dark like stated above

shots of him at the studio board : actually too much is lit. I would like to have seen the bkd alittle darker. The framing is bad considering he is basically in the center of the shot. move him over to the left.....get some close-ups of him, the board, ect.

shots of him at mic in studio: They are the best, good framing, lighting. I would have just added some close-ups to mix in.

Shots of him at the car: This wasn't working for me. Framing was bad, and I could not tell what kind of car he was standing in front of. If its some bently and he is talking about hustling, then get some close ups of the car (show that stuff off) I don't like the cliche stuff in rap videos, but sometimes your tied to what the lyrics are saying.

Last, not a big fan of the split sceens and the constant cross dissolves between shots.

keep em coming!

I'm impressed if that was your first time out of the gate.

The 35mm will help with your depth of field, and help you build some character to the shoot.

I think there are a few things that you could do to make this version pop. I totally agree with all the suggestions thus far. Lighting and framing issues aside, you only had one shot with a pan or moving cam. And like mindzeye said, and IMO as well, it was the best one in the video.

It was hard to tell b/c the music was distorted (which prob was not your fault) but it felt like the video was trying to tell a story, but I'm not sure what it was. Maybe you can have shots of him walking from his studio, to the car, to the ally .......to help make the locations seem more cohesive. In doing that you could get some shots that were not with a static cam.

Oh yeah, it looks funny at the beginning with the narrator talking over your "artist" when the narrator is not on cam and the "artist" is singing the background track. Might want to get some shots of some big dude that looks like he should have a deep voice doing the narration part of the lyrics

But like I said before, I'm still impressed. I look forward to seeing something with the 35mm adapter!

And just to add to my last statement, I just saw on your equipment list that you have a dolly. Would have made for some great walking shots down the street or around the mic in the studio.

Thanks alot for the input, I had written a treatment for the video but the artist did not want to use it.... for some reason he did not want to tell a story with the video. he only had a $200.00 budget and he wanted this real big production. In any case the customer is always right but they still have to be reasonable. ......... on another note I got to shoot some footage with my new DIY adapter the REM35 check it out.

My main critique is the composition of the shots you chose. They just were'nt dynamic enough for me. And I saw you diy, pretty nice.

I am going to pick up a couple of books on cinematography and framing, even lighting. I really hope to make this a hobby that I grow to learn more than love, I mean I want to shoot videos, commersials, weddings.... etc., but I want to do them RIGHT. Music is my first love, video is like my fun time and DVXUSER.COM is like one of the fellows I hang out with. THANKS!
