New Video recorder?

For the price, I think you'd be better off looking at the ki mini or nano, at least then you have proven reliability, plus that built in monitor looks pretty bad. Still options are nice indeed, imo this just isn't it.

What I like is that they will have new codecs in the future. Of course is not clear when but if they had avid DNxHD, I would be VERY interested.

looks like basically the same thing as the ninja, If Atmos could add hd-sdi for a reasonable price that would be the direct competition. For the money that they cost I like the idea of a built in monitor on these recorders, it doesn't need to be high res, just something to show that you're hooked up right and getting picture. Why the nanoflash and ki-pro can get away without them is beyond me.

I've received a mail by Atomos about a new recorder, that will be called Samurai, that works similar to Ninja but will have HD-SDI input, camera timecode, 3:2 pulldown removal and all that Ninja has not.

I don't know the proce yet, but it should be a low cost product, as Ninja

We haven't announced the price for the Samurai yet, but it will be low, and we haven't announced all the features yet.

BTW - all of our products are fully upgradable in to run any codec that we find that there is sufficient demand for (to justify the cost of implementing it) . ProRes was the clear leader so that's why we did that one first.

Why is ProRes the clear leader considering how restrictive (proprietary) and unfriendly (cross platform) Apple MAC is?

The QT gammas issue notwithstanding.

It was the clear leader in terms of the number of people who asked us for it. As I said, we can do other codecs if we see a demand for those as well.

Wonder if that was "over driven" by DSLR shooters.

What was the second most popular choice?

TW - I am very, very interested in this product ... how it develops and how it performs and functions.

Is there are downloadable User manual available?

@ Shooter,

I don't have exact figures but I understand that ProRes was the most popular and that there was no clear consensus on the rest (ie the rest of the intermediate codecs).

Yes, there is a downloadable user manual that will be available very soon from www.atomos.com.

Thanks for your interest in the products!

Hi David,

I appreciate you taking the time to answer our questions.

I would think DNxHD would be very popular too. I hope this will happen in the future and then I definitely will buy such a recorder. :)

Hi Simon,

I'm sure you're right, and it's certainly a possibility, but we can't commit at this time.

But this kind of feedback is very useful. Thanks.

You can include me in this as well. I believe this will become the "universal codec" for both cross platform and post production in the near future.

Good luck.

Keep us posted please.

FWIW : put me in the school of those that are not fully trusting of SD cards ( one scary bad experience already seems to distort ones POV somewhat)

Sounds good. Good luck with everything.

Suggestion for David:

How a bout a version without the monitor and add a SDI loop thru and DNxHD.

I will sign up for one of those right now.

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions: keep them coming! We have a very flexible platform that is going to spawn a whole range of products. We're somewhat enthusiastic about the touchscreen, because it means that we can upgrade all sorts of functionality without being tied to a physical layout of controls; just like an iPad. But now that we've done the "heavy lifting" with the Ninja, we are in a position to spawn a whole range of products based on our technology. This won't happen overnight - because each new product still needs testing, shipping, etc, but we do have an aggressive roadmap for the next year or so. (Please don't ask questions about this though, because we can't talk about it publicly at this stage). Meanwhile, enjoy the Ninja and the Samurai!
