FAQ New version of Davinci Resolve

Not in this forum, and if like me, you don't visit other forums on this site, you could have easily missed it. But thanks for the constructive remarks!

I check the 'whats new' button which gives a overview across the whole board.

BTW it seems great. Im still not convinced on the ability to export audio to get a proper mix done?

I didn't miss the announcement but now I can at least post amongst others where I feel comfortable. Venturing out of the Sony section of DVX is kind of scary for a guy like me.

Now about Davinci Resolve 12 - I have been running v10 for a while since it proved to be more stable for me on both mac and PC hardware. I will probably give v12 a go once I finish up on a few projects.

One huge caution I can advise folks about that can seriously screw you over if you upgrade is that if you exported any looks from prior versions of Resolve they will not necessarily work the same on newer versions. BMD confirmed this with me directly when I upgraded from v9 to v10 and lost a bunch of saved looks I had developed on client projects.

Now I save and archive every version of Resolve that comes out for mac and PC just incase I ever need to go back for any reason.

Hope this tip helps folks out!

FYI I just ported a project across from 11-12.

It seems you can import from your old DB instead of updating that DB (thats what happened to me) Im a bit sketchy on databases

so my new project is not 'Bike_Race' but now 'Bike_Race_DR12'

The footage had been moved to an external HD, I was able to relink the footage no worries and all the colour looks seems to hold as do other edit choices

stable with a new DB and footage location change! nice.

I wanted a few clips from 'bike race' for my reel, I was able to export the clips that made my initial edit and export them as single clips with 25frame handles to my new folder 'reel' - most excellent.

As with all FS7 material I also kill off the dead audio tracks on any transcodes, most excellent.

Im gonna wait a few days before porting my live commercial projects across.

Resolve 12 hasn't been released though, it's an Open Beta which isn't the same thing obviously...

Maybe the database upgrades fine, etc.. but I'm specifically talking about what Davinci Resolve refers to as "power grades" which I call looks - basically they are a snapshot of all your nodes and corrections applied to each node exported into a file.

You can save these, email them to other folks with the same version as you, sell them, bake them, reload them back into another project in Davinci if you wish.

Any of these looks I created in v9 did not load into v10 properly for whatever reason. Let's hope it works going from v10 or 11 to v12.

Maybe the only solution is to port over an entire project and extract the look but that seems quite senseless if all you want is the look.

I have a number of powergrades, some of them quite complex, and I've had no problems following the update. That being said, it's always a good idea to backup your database prior to an update like this.

But what version were you going from Chris, I would be going from v10 to v12.. guess I have some testing to do.

backup backup backup

How do you properly archive a version?

I spent the better part of the afternoon working with this update. I commented in the other topic so I won't repeat it all here, but I give it a big thumbs up. And it also introduces full support for HDR encoding with ACES.

Sorry all I meant by "archive" is that I keep all downloadable versions of Resolve incase I want to reinstall an older version of it for any reason down the road. BMD seems to only keep the latest one on their site at any given time.

cheers,

So far looking really good, real big improvements over previous versions and what's better is the screen layout options are much more optimized. I always found Davinci hard to use on smaller displays. I also like the new qualifier and the best thing I've seen so far is the ability to use splines on curves control, which will let you create a small contrast curve on your curve but then additionally slide it anywhere on the main curve you want. Hard to explain but you can see it in the second video.. this will really let you refine specific contrast within a defined tonal range on your image.

These videos are pretty good primers to what's new and might even blow you away:

Well done BMD you're making Media Composer look like a spreadsheet and I should imagine Autodesk are beginning to wonder if it'll completely pull the rug from under Smoke especially if Fusion gets integrated over time.

I've been testing Resolve 11 and just now installed 12 beta.

It seems like v12 isn't showing the full 4K image though. I thought proxy image was enabled, but it's not. It's only filling a small portion of my 4K monitor when I set it to display 'actual size'. Am I missing something?

This version does seem more stable than 11, which crashed any time I did anything at all with media.

Another thing is I can't get the 4K video to display full screen on the 4K monitor and have the UI on the 2.5K monitor, like I'm used to with Premiere. Is there a particular trick to this, or a limitation of Resolve?

The color and effects stuff is alien to me though. It reminds me of Maya's ShaderFX shader, with it's "connect the nodes" approach which I could never wrap my brain around. The UI also seems to lack many common Premiere functions, like the ability to normalize audio by right clicking the audio, or to determine the handling of frame blending, interlace removal, etc. Maybe it's buried in there somewhere, but for a Premiere user, this is completely alien and opaque as far as slogging my way through other than on the most basic level of import a clip, make a timeline, etc.

I always find it a bit disconcerting when people who have not been around this biz very long start being critical of apps that are in wide acceptance and use. It's sufficient to know that Davinci has always been a color grading tool. BMD has been slowly...SLOWLY...adding editing capability to what is originally a grading tool. There are many features still lacking in Davinci, if one is expecting a full up NLE. Novices criticize applications like Media Composer for its difficulty. The thing is, unless you have a need for very deep editing capability, apps like Davinci or Apple Movie will work just fine for you. If you make a living at editing, eventually you'll run into a capability you won't find in these consumer level editing tools. I'm not sayin' Resolve is a consumer level tool. I'm just sayin' that it's really not (yet) a fully capable NLE.

Resolve 12 still doesn't support AVCHD footage? Given how common that format is, seems like a pretty big omission that's been missing from every version of Resolve so far.

First, AVCHD is a common format in consumer gear, not so much in professional gear. Take this forum, it's for Sony PMW cameras and FS7, none of those cameras shoot AVCHD.

Second, Resolve does support AVCHD. I just loaded a clip I got from a client in just fine. There was some weirdness with the audio, but that shouldn't be a problem for a color grading application.
