New version of D90 upscaler for FCP

hey,

i've updated the d90 upscaler (see homepage below). it's now compatible with red giant instant hd as well as any other third party scaler you might wanna use for the final 801p to 1080p upscale. it uses the same double nest workflow as ihd, which also brings other benefits, like you can apply filters and change the editing of the original sequence and the final upscaled one is updated too. you can still use the slug+well method if that's what you want, it's good if you want to do simultaneous conversion to 25 or 23.976 fps for example. here's from the new readme.txt:

D90 Upscaler (Updated Mar 2009)
This plugin works because the D90 really captures an 800p image and scales it to 720p and the way it's done makes it possible to scale it back up almost losslessly to 800p and then back down to 720p or even better up to your resolution of choice. This update uses a new and largely superior workflow, but the previous "slug and image well" works too. You start by nesting your 720p sequence in a 1080p one, make sure no automatic scaling is done and if it is just reset it, then nest this sequence again in another 1080p sequence. Now apply the filter to this nest, and either use scale to fit, or select native 1280x801 and apply your own scaler. If you're using Instant HD from Red Giant Software for example here's where you apply it, setting the source size to 1280x801. You'll notice that the workflow is exactly the same so no need to nest the clips again, just apply it. You can also use the motion tab, which if motion quality is set to best might yield better results, or maybe export using compressor and its frame control scaling. Good luck.

thanks, but i think you should unstick it. it's an update and as such it's only valid a short time. i don't want to have to necessarily revisit and update this thread all the time. if it's unstuck i'm sure it will still be on the main page for as long as it's relevant. i'd rather post a new thread with more general info about this plugin if you feel it's needed.

Thank you Matt !!

I still don't have the D90 yet probably next month.
b.t.w I will try stay to motivate you and so put some donation in your pocket.

hi mattias,
do you suggest to do coor correction before the two nesting?
is the upscaler the last process?

it depends. :-) it usually doesn't matter much. some effects are better before and some after for obvious reasons, cc is pretty much the same unless you're doing secondaries.

i'll decide in september. :-) i'm most likely upscaling, but i haven't found my favorite final scaling algorithm from 801 to 1080, instant hd works really well, but i'm looking at some even better options.

I'm sure Dario Argento I mean Daniael Aragao would love to know these better options, I will (with my amazing power) alert him to this discussion.

By the way, anyone interested, we would like to show your film on a huge screen down by the river. Matthias? Please argue with me.

I know you are aiming for international distribution and that what we will show cannot be a 35mm print. I'm just letting you knoiw that we there is a very large group of people in this city already aware of you movie and informed ready to watch it. This also goes for people like Zach Foresman and other's who have trailers and nitbits to show. The crowd is usually rampant and an orgy usaully ensues, just jesting.

Maybe I'm just a little slow, but I can't seem to get the double nested thing to work correctly...

You're saying that I take my D90 content on a FC Timeline, select it and choose "nest items" and choose a 1920x1080 timeline... then I do that same thing again... So now I have 3 sequences - my original 720p timeline which now has a 1080p squence in it, which has a 1080p sequence in it, which has my original 720p footage...

So how do I end up with upscaled 1080p and to which sequence do I put your filter?

open the third sequence and apply the filter to the second one that's nested inside it. as you know you need to hit return or select open in viewer if you want to access the setting or the sequence will open in the timeline instead. it's not super easy but once you get it it's really straightforward and very powerful.
