That looks like a robot dog peeing against the wall.

Holy crap I gotta have one of those dust jackets. I don't need one, but it just looks so cool! You reming me of Werner Herzog in 1976, going to the island of Guadeloupe where a volcano is about to explode! (it never did) I hope you get my friend Randy in the final cut. Best of luck and may the angel of life watch your back.

Thanks for the great post Marc. I too am a darkdays fan (being a NYC film guy), and recently got my HVX to shoot B camera on a Varicam HD commercial - wait till you see the footage projected on a 720P projector - it looks amazing.

Marc- since you are in the thick of it - what do you think should be our continued role there? My feeling going in was that it was wrong, but now I have no opinion on what should be done - too complex an issue and it seems were damned if we do, damned if we don't. (pull out that is)

I for one can't wait to see the film - please invite some of us NY based HVX users to a screening once youre done or hell, even just to see some of the footage screened.

Marc. Looks awesome. Who makes the rods and shoulder brace you used?

I remember a friend who went to Iraq as an inbeded photographer and he told me he learned very quickly that you can't wipe the lens of your camera with your shirt.. as he had done for 20 something years prior. That sand gets into everything.. but you look like you have a cool protector there... and plenty of spare UV filters.

Wish ya the best and looking forward to your film. Do you have a tentative release date theatrically and/or on home video or possibly web-downloadable HD? Do you have assistant editors and or editors editing while you are in the field and forwarding you cuts and such... or will you begin post when you get back to the States?

I'm an ex-British patriot living in Florida. I'm going back to my hometown of Long Eaton to do a documentary on the textile industry today.. and doing a piece on my family and dad who've worked in the industry that pretty much created child labor and the unions and all that jazz. I'm hoping to do the entire trip on canal barge going up and down the old textile rivers.. visting the new trendy malls and whatever that occupy the now old mills. It's also something to do with my dad.. so that's the real deal.

All the best.

You should do it on the return of the Long Eaton Invaders speedway team. Bit of a battle going on between local residents, speedway fans and the developers.

Funny you should say that. We’ve been thinking about manufacturing and marketing the rain jacket in some colors a little less intimidating :) Since this picture was taken we’ve also made a few changes that make it even better. We shall see.... I’ve got to make a film first !

To tell you the truth I don’t really think about the ‘what ifs’ all that much. I figure whatever is going to happen, is going to happen. The fear of dying or getting hurt hasn’t ever stopped me doing anything I’ve ever wanted to do. - I’ve been this way as long as I can remember.

I don’t worry about the camera being mistaken for a gun or rocket as I am dressed exactly the same as the guys I’m with. If I get shot at, that means that they are getting shot at too, and if they get shot at.... well, it’ll make for some interesting footage :)

I’m leaving again tomorrow for another three straight weeks of training, but wanted to tell you all I’ve had a lot of fun communicating with everyone on this website and really do appreciate your kind words about ‘Dark Days.’ Hopefully I won’t let you down with this one. So far though, I think it’s going well and you’re going to be in for a treat when it’s done... Fingers crossed anyway :)

I look forward to getting back and posting another report!
Take care and good luck.

Marc

i like the intimidating color of the rain jacket... and even the shoulder mount too..

who makes the shoulder mount? does anybody know?

I'm not too familiar with this audio recorder...one question is how does timecode reach the audio recorded onto this device?

The majority of the sound for the film is recorded via wireless microphones onto three Sound Devices 722 hard drive recorders. The unit also takes compact flash cards and it records to both the hard drive and the card at the same time. The guys work in six man teams and each one of them has a waterproof wireless mic permanently attached to his flak jacket. On top of the camera I have a sanken shotgun microphone to record ambient sound and there is also another microphone that records all of the platoons radio traffic.

I think the timecode would be set for free run on the recorders... all in sych and the same thing with the camera. Those Sound Device units are incredible, too. Super small with the ability to do 24 bit 192khz sampling rates. Nice pre-amps and really really clean.

On the hard drive issue, I think there are companies that offer remote storage systems. I saw it somewhere where a filmmaker transferred footage to a remote company across the U.S. They back up the footage and its available to you whenever you want it. Not sure of their name but I will do more research. Much better than having 100 hard drives in your house.
