New to the HMC150. Many Q's

So, like many others, I've been searching for authorized dealers who have the HMC150 IN stock. I have discovered that Studio Exchange out of Burbank, CA has a decent supply. Does anyone have any experience with these guys? They've quoted me 3299 and have offered great prices on the accessories I'm looking at. I'm about to seal the deal and want to see if anyone has any suggestions in regards to what shotgun mics, lighting, or support systems work well with the HMC. Does anyone know how well the glidecam 3000 works with these cams?

One more question. How does converting to ProRes compare to capturing dv off tapes? Is it faster? Please excuse me if these questions have been asked before. There is so much info on this site that sometimes its hard to keep up with everything.

Can't answer many of your questions. But I'm hearing that transcoding is pretty close to real time on both PC and Macs (I'm a PC). So that means it's not inherently faster compared to capturing DV tapes. Of course, it depends a lot on your computer specs.

ProRes will also take up 3-6x as much space as AVCHD (depending on resolution/frame rate). On Macbook Pro's, it encodes close to real time, but Mac Pros will encode faster. You can also dump the footage from multiple cards first, then import it all in one batch. So unlike HDV, you don't have to babysit while the tapes are ingesting.

On my Mac Pro log/transfer takes about 80% of real time... so it is faster than capturing. (2 year old machine). On my i7 PC w/CS4... I just drop the file into the timeline after copying them to the drive... no transcoding... This process is faster/better than capturing in about every way- on either platform.

This is all so true, my core 2 duo and vegas beats the pants of the new 24" mac and fcp when it comes to log and transfer. All and All - way better then capturing... I really try my hardest not to ever touch a miniDV tape if I can.

Glidecam works great, I havent shot anything important with it yet... but will soon... here is more:

Log & Transfer is a specifically-Apple thing. Every other editor lets you import the footage directly from the cards without having to go through that step.

However, depending on your computer processor speed, you may want to go through L&T or something similar, to transcode the footage into a fast editing codec (for example, on EDIUS, you can use a file converter to go to Canopus HQ codec).

Using Vegas I use - Import / AVCHD - which does make the files easier to work with in the timeline...
