Hi guys i am planing to shoot short film 2 min long and i have d90 with standard lens that i can use my question is. I would like to use 35 mm lens what lenses can i use on this cam? to get that depth of film look? can i use any maker model? And when it comes to shooting outside what lens would you use? This camera can only shoot 720p am i correct here. What about lightning does this camera need lots of light? and last question storage what card would you use for video?

Thanks

For low light AND for shallow dof choose a fast lens. You will want to lock the aperture prior to entering live view to avoid it adjusting exposure while filming...one of the problems with the D90 is that the camera takes over adjustments in live view mode. It does only shoot HD at a full 24 frames a second...not 23.98...which was another oddity about the D90. On the kit lens, you can still get shallow dof, by standing back and zooming in. One other thing....lock all shots down on a tripod or other method, unless you have EXTREMELY super human steady hands....the CMOS skew on the D90 will spring up with just a bit of jarring. Most of all, read the D90 tips and tricks here in the Nikon section and experiment with it a lot to know what you can get away with.

Fast lens means wide maximum aperture. Wide == low number. Wide aperture lets in more light, and produces shallower depth of field.

F/1.8 lens is faster than F/2.8.

The fastest dSLR zoom lenses are F/2.8.
The fastest dSLR prime (non-zoom) lenses are F/1.2 or F/1.4.

Fast lenses tend to be more expensive than slower lenses.
Most lenses are sharpest when stopped down by a stop.
"stopped down" means aperture is narrowed (increasing number).
A single "stop" is a 2:1 ratio.
A single stop difference in shutter speed is a doubling or halving.
A single stop in ISO is halving or doubling.
A single stop in aperture is a square root of 2 (roughly 1.4). F/2 is one stop faster than F/2.8. F/5.6 is two stops slower than F/2.8.
To achieve the same exposure when stopping the lens from F/4 to F/5.6, you must halve the shutter speed (double the exposure time).

Suggest you experiment with your kit lens. Try difference aperture settings. It helps to use a tripod, to take hand blur out of the equation.

Dude, forget the D90 for filming. It is great for stills but a disaster for video shooting. It was the first generation video for Nikon and a total experiment. If you want good looking video with manual control from a Nikon you got to go to the D7000 at least. It is a waste of time and effort to attempt to shoot anything serious with the D90.

Why is it a waste of time to use a D90?

I have a D700 and a D90. The D700 (not D7000) is much better for stills, but the D90 is way better for video.
If you already have a D90, and your budget is zero, can't you learn quite a bit using a D90?

No it is not. This is very, very, very old news. The D90's is not good for video. I have one and stills are great but video, NO. You better of getting a d5100 if the budget is low. It doesn't have manual controls but neither does the D90. And the D90 video is like VHS compared to the d5100. If you like a soup of jello among other things, be my guess and go shoot video with the D90. You try to advise people and they don't listen. So go ahead and find out by yourself.

Hi,

If enny has the D90 and has no great expectations, it will produce video, albeit not terrific video, and certainly way, way better than D700 video. ;-)

OTOH, if video is meaningful, and enny wants to really get into video, he might want to consider changing to a D7000 or D800, but the D90 does do video.
