New To HVX... Workflow Questions

Hello All,

I came across this site looking for information and there seems to be a wealth of knowledge here. This is my first post and I look forward to your answers.

I have been looking for a high quality, portable, and versatile camera that had a tapeless workflow. After much research I believe I have settled on the HVX-200A. However after reading the manual and all the information I could find I still have a question about how the files are handled in a NLE. (Specifically FCP 6) I searched the forums here and found a lot of partial answers (and more questions) but could not find a precise answer to my quarry, so my apologies if this is re-hashing past topics.

The question(s):

When using multiple P2 cards and spanning multiple cards how do the clips show up in FCP? How is the data handled when one clip spans two (or three) cards? Does it show up as two clips, or as one?

What happens when you use two cards for longer recordings? i.e. If I have two cards. I fill up one card, when the camera switches over to the second card I take out the first, dump the data and reinsert the card to continue recording after the second one is filled up. What can I expect in this situation.

With that in mind is is better to use a larger format device like a FS-100 for longer format?

I know these questions seem elementary to experienced users, but it is important to me to make sure my expectations are legitimate. I understand what the camera 'can do' but I would like to hear from users the actuality of the workflow.

I hope this is clear enough.

Thanks in advance!

We just got a couple of HVX200's and the work flow seems pretty simple. You just open log and transfer in FCP and it gives you a list of all the clips on the left, then you can put in all the info and view them on the right. You can also set in and out points there in case you don't want the whole clip.

As far as clips spanning both cards it just notes that they are spanned in the info for them and captures them as one clip.

As for longer recordings the camera makes new clips every time you press the record button and also automatically divides them into new clips once they reach a certain length. I don't know that you can change this, however. for long recordings like that it will show up as a series of clips. As for dumping 1 card and continuing with card 2, i'm not sure how that would work, and i'd be wary of messing up clips in the process. You're probably better off using a firestore for that.

That is the answer I was looking for. Thank you. I have used the log and capture with P2 before, but not when spanning cards, or multiple clips. I did not remember a 'capture as one clip' setting. I am assuming that although 2 files in format FCP will treat them as one clip.

Did I understand this correctly?

Thanks!
