New Time-Lapse

Okay so here's some new stuff. I'm not happy with all of it but its all kind of an experiment for me. To see what works and what doesn't. The last clip in this with the two guys was just a spur of the moment type of thing. Might try and do something like that again but planned out. Right after I had finished shooting the planes flying around. We walked over the hill and there were two cops coming to kick us out. They said that we shouldn't be taking pictures of LAX and that next time the FBI might hold us for questioning. Now I'm totaly going back there. How cool would that be to be questioned by the FBI. Hey, if they didn't want us there they should have put up a fence. Anyway, here's the clip.

More great stuff Drew. I really like the play fighting in the parking lot. At least I hope that was play fighting or dancing. really hard to tell.

Lolx, questioned by the FBI, could be the next Church Of Scientology.

Anyways, that opening shot has perfect low-light light. Do you remember what settings you did? Was it all in-cam, or some CC?

Great stuff great stuff. (Great stuff.)

By the way, I've NEVER seen a shot of planes that fast before. How long is that footage? That was like seven planes or something.

Sirius, it was just play fighting. I was going to get some more shots of the jets coming in but it was late and there weren't that many. So that's why I did the fight thing instead. I was good because I needed to do a test like that anyway. Thanks for the comments.

Mattch, I'll post the setting when I get home tonight but they weren't that different from the other settings I used for the other clips. Just check out the old time-lapse post. Yeah that was funny about the FBI thing. I might need to bring my DVX out with me next time I go to LAX. There was no CC done to these clips BTW.

How exactly did you do your time-lapse? Did you tape for long periods of time and then speed it up, or did you use the DVX's time-lapse function? If so, can you tell us your settings? Also, was this shot in 24p? Very nice work.

Kevin, all my time-lapse stuff is shot on a digital SLR camera. The last two postings where shot with the 20D and the one of the LA traffic was shot with the Digital Rebel 300D. I posted how to do this in the LA traffic post. BTW when I render it out in a sequence I do set it at 24p. Here's the link to the page.

Also later this week I'm going to get another LA traffic clip with the 20D, stick in some of the LAX airstrip stuff and render it out in 720p HD for you guys. It will be posted on the .Mac account I have because I know that will eat up a lot of bandwidth on my site. I know it will suck for you guys with dial-up but hey, what can I do. Look for that this Friday or Saturday. To see it in HD is something completly different.

Wow! Another awesome time-lapse. Keep posting these every couple days cause its really inspiring :)

Okay, now after all those pictures you want to make a file and import them into it. Then what I do in Final Cut Pro is import the pictures into my project bin as a folder. Now before you do this you need to go into the preferences and change the freeze frame duration to 1 frame, which would look like 00:00:00:01. Then make a 24p timeline as you would normally for the DVX footage. Select all the pictures you took and drag them into the timeline. You might have to render it depending on your system. That's how you do it.

Anyone know if this is the same on Premiere Pro 1.5? I couldn't find that Freeze Frame Duration setting :p thanks.

Drew, that shot of the planes touching down is incredible--you had a great angle and the whole thing is beautiful. My advice is to forget about everything else and get for 5-10 minutes worth of that same shot. Then shop it around to a top notch stock house and I think you can expect to make some serious money. Some art director is going to see that shot and build a commercial around it. At this point there isn't a lot of this quality stuff floating around in HD.

Barry S, I know I need to get some more of that shot with the planes coming down. Its one of my favorite things I've gotten so far. I don't know about getting 5-10 minutes worth of it. That would take a while and the cops show up after I'm there for 30 minutes. I am going to go back there again and get some wider shots of it and some different framing. Also the footage has a greater resolution than HD. I think it might be over 2K rez. I need to get there a little earlier when the planes are coming in more frequently and taking off. I'm not even sure where to shop this around to. I know there are a couple sites out there for stock footage. But I don't know about any of them. I guess I could look up places in Burbank and Hollywood. Any suggestions on where to go would be great. It would be nice to pay for the 20D with that.

I know in the other thread this type of footage inspried lots of people to buy digital slr cameras. If you are buying one, buy a lot of batteries. I was experimenting with this stuff on my Canon 20D and the normal battery goes dead in about 5-7 minutes on me, fully charged. Just a heads up. Great footage drew - the planes coming in to land were awesome.

Barry's right, like I said, planes just have never been seen in a shot like that before. I can think of a dozen commercials that could work with that. Like if it was for an airline [wouldn't have to be] they could talk about always touching-down safely, and bringing you home as many times as you need or whatever.

Mehnkle, I filled up a 1GB card on one battery. At the medium settings that was around 400 and some odd pictures. Granted it didn't take me long to fill it up but it did seem like the battery lasted longer than 5-7 minutes. I did have to change batteries at the end of the card. But I have three of them so it really isn't that big of a problem. It would be if I had to change a battery in the middle of a sequence.

Mattch, thanks for the tip. I might try and see if I get some info on who to contact over there. Maybe then they won't call the police or the FBI on me when I go out there next time.

Snowroach, for this sequence that I posted I used music from "The Aphex Twins". Its a remix album called "26 Mixes for Cash" and the name of the song is "Raising the Titanic".

Bluespider, the two guys in the clip are my roommates. I just tell them where to go and operate the camera.
