New Threads

Well, glad you mods were on top of it (as always) :)

I did something really similar Horse. I posted my first short up when I joined (I had been lurking for a long time) and my short got some good critique, so I waited for a long time, and then saw Zombiefest through... then during sci-fest I got more involved.

Yeah, I did something similar, as well. I worked in the industry for 17 years before making a post on DVXuser. :)

I've barely been alive 17 years :) But its awesome to know that you all have so much more experience than me... I have a lot to learn.

My 2¢...

Of all the forums that I frequent, DVXUser has the least amount of problems with spammers. I hate to see someone hijack a resource like what we have here, but I don't think it's enough of a problem to start deterring new users from legitimately getting involved.

What about 10 posts until you can start a thread? It took me 6 months to get to 100...seems like a long time to make people wait before they can start a thread.

Yeah........when I suggested 100 it was off the top of my head. I can see where that is a bit extreme. 10 seems very reasonable and may deter spamming while also encouraging new members to use the search feature, which is such a great resource of information.

I think 2-5 posts before starting a thread. I'd be willing to bet that would be enough to keep the spammers away, and if not, it could always be raised.

If the post count is too high, then lurkers, who have a problem and need a quick solution may start posting questions in already existing threads that have nothing to do with the topic. That could be just as annoying.

And what will those 10 posts be, if they're a real noob? "Hi. I don't know the answer to that."

And it wouldn't prevent spam, anyway. It would just stop it from being a new thread. Instead, it'll pop up in the middle of something else. Like that thread in DIY asking who would pay $30 bucks for a vibrator.

Yep. Until we figure out a good method of cutting down on the yahoos, just alert a moderator if you see anything out of line.

I lurked here for a year before I made my first post. I was one of those people you see on the first page where it says 512 people online, 11 members. I was one of the 512. I think what makes this place great is that a lot of people's first post is a thread introducing themselves, asking what the clunk is, or asking where to buy. Now, just like everyone else, I hate the clunk threads and I hate the where to buy threads and normally chime in with something rude, offensive, and a suggestion to try the search (which I reference in my sig), but I think the rare spam thing is worth having new members be able to join. Furthermore, a lot of people aren't active in the community but join just to sell something. There's nothing wrong with that either.

Finally, a good example is that Joey Lawrence thread in the photography section. I have been amazed by this kids work and that was his first post.

Ultimately, it is good for people to be able to participate even if we have to filter through insurance quotes, porn, and identity searches on a rare occurance.

I got an email from another board member a couple days ago asking about the same issue he was having, its a new thing out there i guess and I will do what i can to stop it. The good thing is, as much as these guys try and hop IP's, I can trace every one of them with flashback, so its kinda silly.

Heeeey, Its "Would you pay $30 for DIY vibrating 35mm plans?". :)

Spam is like bacteria. You can do things to avoid it temporarily, but it will evolve and find its way back in. I agree with GenJerDan that it would probably pop up in other places and possibly become more of a problem. My take is that it should probably be treated like a child who is acting out for attention... ignored. See it, report it, ignore it, delete it. HooooRaaa!

Just my $00.02.

Not only do I agree with you completely, but I was also thinking about that kids thread when I first responded to THIS one. He's fantastic. I'm not a cynic, but he almost seems too good for his age. He says hes got a Photoshop DVD for sale...sign me up!.

I had to do a search for Mr Woo and now that I did I think I just threw up in my mouth

Dude should shot for posting that crap

Yeah.....well it was the first thread I opened up early this morning. That was not the kind of "Good Morning" I was expecting. I'm no prude but that was really really gross. I guess I've become complacent regarding opening threads here and that's a good thing because, unlike many forums, this site and it's members are really considerate to it's fellow members, especially regarding hard core porn.

I can dig it Marlene

I can totally jive with Playboy (and some soft core) but that hard-core is waaaaayyyyyyy too much info. Bad bad bad. Who likes that stuff ?
