New Threads

Flicks By Chics
I hope that this mornings porn spam by John Woo will encourage the mods to impliment a plan of blocking new members from starting threads until they've reached a certain number, like 100, of posts keeping with the content of this forum.

Hmm, interesting concept....it would also cut down on the "tell me which tripod to get, the search function didn't give me anything" threads.....or the people who come on here with 1 post who are trying to sell something.....

I agree.

Like I said just the other day...

I would like to see a new policy that required hundred posts (at a daily average of no more than about 4.5 posts) in order to start new threads.

I like that idea.

I understand where you're coming from, but part of the point is for people to come here and ask questions. To have to post 100 times before a question could be asked seems like a policy that would negatively impact the helpfullness of this site. Or would lead to more thread hijacking.

My two cents.

Yes......it would encourage new user's to use the search function. I'm sure that it would have a lot of benefits. However, new user could still reply in threads with an off topic subject......like John Woo's. Spammers usually find a way to get their spam across but any attempt at stopping them is better than no attempt I suppose.

I'm very new, and I understand both sides of the coin. It's great from an administrative perspective, but it also inhibits the creative and question process.

The only other forum I'm active on is the one for the Miata, and everyone there is pretty cool about people who've asked the same question 40 times over. They just point them in the right direction, or sometimes a good discussion will spring up out of the thread.

Perhaps a happy medium could be reached. No one under 100 posts are allowed to post new threads, but a person's limit to post per day does not apply. If someone spends all day posting 100 things, from all that work they deserve to post something to get them in trouble, not really, but what I'm saying is most people won't take the time and effort to post 100 things in a matter of 24 hours just to post a prank or try to sell something, its' too much work for them.

Yeah, as with anything there could be negative consequences to this, but overall I think something could be reached where it would help everyone on both sides. Let's face it, there are plenty of threads out there to post in that will answer 90% of the questions that a first time poster would ask anyway, they just have to do a search for those posts....Who knows, they might even run across some threads that will answer questions they didn't even think about....I still don't know what the John Woo thing you're referring to is all about though....maybe I'm blind? And I agree with you Miata, if someone REALLY wants to spend time getting 100 posts just to prank off, chances are likely they would be gone before they got the 100 posts anyway.

Fortunately, the John Woo thing was caught almost immediately and dealt with.

Good. Sounds like it needed to be. Another example of the fine moderators on this forum!

I understand where you are coming from but I can't help but agree a little bit with krestofre...

This site is a free forum and a wealth of information for everybody. The lucky few of us happen to have stuck around for a while. And we are the ones who see the rare spam postings or the new threads started just so a question could be asked...a question that has been asked a million times...

But, in reality, if you don't feel like answering somebodies question, you don't have to. They'll figure it out. They'll find the SEARCH function or find what they are looking for or someone else will come along and attempt to answer the question.

I just think that if we really start tightening the reigns around here, no good can come from it. Often times a first post can and will come in the way of a question. Its natural. Think back to your first post here. A first post at DVXuser can be intimidating. It doesn't seem like it should be. But it is. This is a tough crowd at first and the newbies sense that and hijacking a thread or responding to a thread or trying to make a witty remark in a thread as your first post is akin to going into a complete strangers house and helping yourself to the fridge. We should go easy on 'em.

Besides, the newbies can't help it if they are complete moronic a$$hats who are too lazy to navigate the site and feel the vibe before they selfishly waste all of our time by diving in and posting a stupid question. Its only natural.

Excellent point rlm. I usually do just ignore the posts that I don't want to answer. Not everyone does though. There is also the argument that these posts could bury other peoples posts that may not have been discussed before, that won't be helped by a search. I don't even know if this is necessarily a problem, just something to think about. And I'm not trying to be elitist, because I know where I came from, and knew I was a n00b at one time. Heck, I'm sure I'm guilty of this even after I had more than 100 posts

I concur, Rick. If these proposed restrictions had been in place all along, I wonder how many of us would still be here. Sometimes people have to bump into things and fall down before they learn a lesson. So be it. We can't go closing all the doors behind us and pretend to be above it all ourseleves. That's just crazy talk.

Here's my DVXuser story:
I joined in November of 2003, posted 4 times, realized I was a noob and shut my mouth for 6 months. I spent that time reading every thread on this site. Then I bought my DVX, with the full knowledge of what that clunk was (and plenty of other things), so that I didn't have to ask.:)

Well, glad you mods were on top of it (as always) :)

I did something really similar Horse. I posted my first short up when I joined (I had been lurking for a long time) and my short got some good critique, so I waited for a long time, and then saw Zombiefest through... then during sci-fest I got more involved.
