I need constructive criticism for my film's new theatrical trailer.

The film is called "Escape De Los Santos".
All formats are available for quick downloads.
I appreciate your time and comments.
Thanks and happy viewing.
Sincerely, Ricardo Mendoza.

Re: New Theatrical Trailer of movie done with DVX1

I just watched the large version (2:00) trailer. I must say that it looks like a very interesting movie. I will defiantly see this if I ever get the chance. However, I think the audio was terrible. If there is any chance for you to go back and record new sound effects then I strongly suggest you do that. It's very hollow sounding now....

Other than that, I liked the shots... I liked the concept of the story...

The trailer looks good, but the audio and practical sound effects do sound a bit hollow (not sure if this is what Tyler meant as well). The music generally sounded better, so I can't just chalk it up to heavy compression artifacts, either.

The sound just generally lacked 'oomph' to me ... but it was compelling. What are your plans for distribution? I'd be interested to see this as well.

I don't know how the original sounds like but I am pretty sure the metallic (talking inside a tin can effect) was due to the compression used for the clip.

This movie looks terrific! Well done! Congrats!

Thanks for your input guys.
I kind of instinctively knew that it needed more thorough work with audio, but unfortunately nobody [that I showed it to} was complaining, so that made me uneasy. But I am glad that you guys caught it.
I noticed that the compression did indeed make some voices a lot echo-ey and hollow, I'll have to give it another pass at it.

Anyway, I really do appreciate your input.

About distribution, I really don't have any idea how I'm going to distribute it.
I am focusing more on having an excellent finished film, but distribution keeps lingering in the back of my mind.
So at this point, I don't know how or who is gonna distribute.

Thanx.
Sincerely Ricardo Mendoza.

PS: I thought that the drumming at the beginning of the trailer could be interesting for you guys to know how that was done.
The tribal drums are actually me hitting on an old metallic desk in my editing station. I just recorded it with a shot gun and inserted it into an audio editing program. Added reverb and it sounds like a million dollars.
I did have some songs selected but neither of them had that tension.
That's my 2 cents.

Thanks again.

wow! that was great. the shot composition was really good. did you use any stabilizing rigs? i didn't notice any shakyness anywhere. i would definitely watch it.

This looks very good and well put together. You can tell alot of hard work went into this. The acting was pretty good and the shots looked great. Nice color correction on some of the shots. Good luck with your debut.

I liked it, the editing especially.

I think the trailer is well done. I'm not getting the audio is horrible thing, I don't think it sounds bad. (P.s. I'm very critical in that regard). Seems like a little inspiration was derived from Robert Rodriguez (not a bad thing either) I like the shot pointing up through the floor boards with the ultra blue sky. Nice!

nice edit. the audio sounds like a compression thing.

did u edit in premiere/after effects?

Re: New Theatrical Trailer of movie done with DVX1

Re: New Theatrical Trailer of movie done with DVX1

This was edited with avid xpress pro and after effects.
I put in a new section called "the secret area". This area is supposed to have tips and tricks that I used along the way to make the film.
I am still editing the film, but I am considering to transfer over to premiere, cause I am going to upgrade my software to the digital video pro bundle from adobe.
You can access this area by going to:

I am still in the process of revamping our website.

I plan to finish the film by November/December. Apart from that, I'd like to thank you guys for your input.

Just in case you're curious:
I filmed the movie with a dvx100 (not A version), 24P adv. at 1/48th shutter at full 720*480 resolution (no 16:9 converter). and an Audio technica shotgun.

Que onda, loco? I thought your material was good. Really got my attention. And I am from Tijuana so I know what the hell you are talking about here.

Re: New Theatrical Trailer of movie done with DVX1

Re: New Theatrical Trailer of movie done with DVX1

okay, very simply, why is this 2 minutes long?

the most any commercial for a movie should be is 30 seconds. no more. no less.

second, tell me why i should want to make the effort to get out and see it and shell out my hard earned dinero for the privledge. do not show me the whole plot of the movie in the commercial. i know everything that happens now, leaving no surprises. i want to be surprised (considering of course the movie is well written enough it has some).

a great many hollywood films do this exact same thing, to the great detriment of the filmgoing public, and to thier own boxoffice receipts. a lack of originality and work in the advertising has led to this lazy style of promotion. its more of a highlight reel of the necessary moments of the film instead of wooing the audience to want to see it. why should i want to see the filler material if you just showed me everything vital to the thing in your ad?

one of the many things that really irks me about movies today. save it for the screening. go back and look at great ad campaigns for films like the matrix (the first one) or the orginal superman with christopher reeves. its not clips of the movie...its an enticement to go see it...to find out...what is the matrix......or....how super is superman? no clips.

if you just stopped after the line "...or like terrorists" that would be more than enough. very relevant, and makes me want to know what that garners someone south of the border...is it worse than gitmo?

Re: New Theatrical Trailer of movie done with DVX1

Thank you very much for that refreshing post Israel.
I found it very interesting & with many relevant points.

I made it 2 min. simply because of the standard length of trailers. There are many crappy movies out there and I want the film-makers to give me a taste of what they have to offer if I am going to shell out my hard earned $7 bucks. I see it as kind of like a test drive or a sample of ice cream or something like that.
Secondly, I think your point of revealing the plot in the trailer was very good.
I agree.
Unfortunately, I am heavily relying on the plot, the story, the shots, and the editing.
I can't bank on anything else. I don't have the special effects of the matrix, and I don't have superman.
I am not trying to compete with hollywood, or anything else. I just think we have a cool story that needs to be told.

I really wish I could save everything for the screening, just like M.Night would. All he has to do is put his name in a trailer and you know you're in for a ride. Unfortunately, I cannot bank on my name or on an actor. All I have left is a great plot, and I really feel I have to prove myself in the trailer in order to intrigue people to see what the hell happens.

Aside from that I agree with the above post. very thought provoking.

I appreciate your insight.
Sincerely, Ricardo Mendoza.

At Ricardo:

What made you decide to use the DVX?
Was this camera your fisrt choice or did you have others in mind?

PS maybe it was just me, but the colour seemed a bit washed/ fainter on the bit where he is held to the ground with the gun to his head part.

i really liked the different colours scenes (start part: Orange effect, and man talking behind fence/prison bars part, also when they get out of the car and some of the outdoor stuff was just great!)

Re: New Theatrical Trailer of movie done with DVX1

Re: New Theatrical Trailer of movie done with DVX1

Anhar,
I had a vx-2000 (sony) but I wanted to shoot progressive and in 24P so the dvx was the only affordable option [at the time], so I ebayed the vx and got the dvx, and it turned out much better.

The compression really killed a lot of the colors in the shots, so it could be the compression, that could be the reason for the washed out thing...

All of the color scenes were white balanced that way, I only enhanced the brightness/contrast. I actually have those cards they give out at home depot for paint, and I white balnce off of them. For example, if I want a yellow color tint, I would use a light blue card and white balance off of it. very simple, but effective.

Thanks.
Ricardo Mendoza.
