I got a brand new Tamron 10-24 for my D5100. Before buying it I read reviews etc and there was lots of talk about it not being as sharp as the Nikkor 10-24. As I was investigating I also saw images, that for my use, showed a very acceptable level of sharpness. So it gets here last week and today I am out for dinner with the family. I take some images near the end of dinner and check them out here at home. Both my sister and then again my niece are very soft, but the table legs 6 feet behind them are quite sharp. I was in Aperture Priority and letting the camera set everything, including focus. The image of my sister is at 24mm, f4.5, ISO 100, 1/60 and onboard flash was fired. She was possibly 10 or so feet away.
I bought the lens online from an authorized Tamron dealer out of New York. Being this is Black Weekend, there's not going to be anyone to answer any questions there until probably next week Tuesday or later. So coming here and see if maybe you guys can enlighten me ???
I am assuming I have a back focussing issue here, right ??? I also am assuming the lens is defective or in need or serious calibration ??? I have read other people discussing various other lenses they have bought and saying they have gone through 2 and 3 copies before finally finding a good one.
So what is normal procedure when you get a new lens that really kinda sucks ??? Do I send this back to the dealer and request a replacement, or send it to Tamron and request it be repaired/calibrated ??? Or do you think it might just be junk and there is no salvation for it at all ???
Before the Nikon I had Panasonic and never had any issue with a Lumix lens. Also my Nikkor lenses have all been fine, at least good enough to my eyes to the point I see no issues with them. For my limited needs for an UWA, this Tamron is at the price point where I can justify owning one. So I am good with the Tamron, if it just didn't suck, like it does right now.
Any advise and guidance on how to proceed will be greatly appreciated !!!
