New Subthread for A7s?

Since the A7s is going to be a very hot camera, how about creating a new subthread for it? (just like the FS100 and FS700 threads)

I think that seems like a solid idea. But I was sort of wondering if it should go in the DSLR section since its more closely related in body type. I'll see if I can start a discussion with the admins about this.

My take: there should be a Sony section in the DSLR subforum. And you should join the canon aps-c and ff subforums, not much activity there anymore...

No, it should not go to DSLR section as it's not a DSLR. It shares the E-mount with FS series and other E-mount still cameras.

Please change the name of the forum to "Sony E-mount Cameras" as the word Nex is defunct now. New cameras are using "Alpha" title (A6000, A7s, etc).

It's not a DSLR and absolutely should not go to DSLR section.

It's E-mount mirrorless cameras like FS700, FS100, VG900, A6000, Nex-7 et. All these cameras share the same mount, same lenses, same adapters.

Do NOT SPLIT THE CAMERAS IN STUPID CATEGORIES LIKE A DSLR

It's not a DSLR

The A-mount cameras (A77, A99, A900, etc) belong to DSLR section as they have a different mount

Does that go for the GH4 too? :p

For me the distinction is "video cameras" vs "stills cameras that shoot video", and we usually call those DSLRs, even if they don't have a mirror. Not a big deal either way, in any case.

Just because they put GH4 in wrong section doesn't mean they have to put A7s in it to too, to be consistently wrong.

A7s belongs in this section as it shares the mount, the adapters, the lenses, and everything else with other cameras,

Create A7s sub forum here, and rename the main forum from Nex to "Sony E-mount cameras"

Canon EOS cinema cameras share the mount and the lenses with Canon DSLR cameras but still are in different subforums. :)
It is really a matter of view point.

IMO, the most straightforward classification is by manufacturer. The border between stills and video cameras is disappearing. No point in maintaining it in forum structure anymore because it is not future proof.

At least the cinema cameras are mirrorless and not DSLR. There is absolutely no justification to move A7s from all other E-mount cameras to a totally location. That's silly introduction to confused organization (like most of this site already is). . And what about all other E-mount cameras? Nex-7, A6000, etc?

All these cameras belong in one section under Sony's E Mount cameras, along with FS700 and FS100, and VG900 etc

Maybe you can create a new subforum for popular version like A7s, but they shouldn't move around based on body shape.

And GH should be in a subforum under a main forum called M4/3 cameras.

Seriously, who came up with absolutely ridiculous organization of the forum?

OK, so let's change DSLR by Stills Cameras, and create a Sony section there, since there's no point in making a distinction based on whether it has a mirror or not.

Or get rid of the DSLR-vs-camcorder distinction, as cpc suggested.
As looking at the NEX and Sony-Other forum suggests, people prefer posting on a forum that is specific to their brand than in a forum that is specific of the type of camera.

Funny thing is we get a lot of camera comparison threads in the DSLR generic section. From there they pick a subsection like the GH or Canon or Nikon. I've actually gotten requests to open a Sony section in that part of the forum because it feels unrepresented there. I'm glad so many users have found a section to discuss it here, but it seems to me that many people who consider it more like the other small body DSLR style cameras are NOT finding this section to discuss it in.

The AF100 and GH2/3/4 have always been in different sections because despite the mount and lenses being similar, the function and use of the camera was not. With different primary goals for the camera, as well as different price points, the expectations and discussion differ. To my knowledge, no one argued that this was confusing. I wonder why the assumption that Sony users are different. Are they not sharp enough to follow suit?

This could honestly be argued both ways, but we have to pick one for consistency. The way being proposed in this thread is not consistent or unequivocally better than what we've been doing.

Good. I see you realize all options have pros and cons. We'll wait for you mods to sort this out. THEN we will complain and start posting in the wrong sections :p

Don not move A7s , dude. This forum has been around for a while now and have covered cameras like A6000, Nex-7, A7r. Nw you want to move the A7s to "Dslr" section with A-mount cameras that have different mount?

Give us a break. If you don't want to create a sub forum for A7s, don't don't anything.

The reason to keep the new subthread A7s under E-mount cameras is that it will be close to its siblings. For example, if a person has a question about a new e-mount lens, they can post it in the general E-Mount section. If they have a comment specific to A7s, they can post it in that thread. And both will be close to each other.

Exactly. The cameras need to be together under commun mount, as that is the most important aspect (lenses, adapters) . There could be sub forums for more important cameras, but there should be some logic behind the top level organization. A "DSLR" is illogical category as the camera isn't even a DSLR (no OVF for example).

Apparently some think anything that looks like a "DSLR" is a "DSLR" even if it isn't.

Please stop with the "doesn't have a mirror" thing, it's not relevant at all, just call it a stills camera if the R in DSLR is so insulting to you.

The subforum is currently called "HDSLRs", which doesn't actually stand for anything and got obsolete about half an hour after people started using it. And still we managed to get the information we were looking for. I would call it "stills cameras", but mods will decide whatever they want, and we will all be unhappy about it, and it won't matter even a tiny bit.

For video purposes, the a7s is a lot closer in its feature-set to the FS100/FS700 I think. It seems to be a camera designed for video in a still body as opposed to most of the others which are still cameras in still bodies with some video functions tacked on. Maybe I just feel that way because I have owned and liked shooting on the FS700 and FS100 and am receiving my A7S today but would never even consider shooting pro video on any of the other NEX or Alpha cameras since they pretty much all line-skip for video and don't have a lot of the video functionality most professionals camera operators need.
