F3: New Sub Forum for F3?

I know this was mentioned late last year, then the moderators simply merged all the F series cameras together, but I think it's time to reconsider that move, or at least throw the question out to all participants on the forum.

Why? Well as I'm someone who will be sticking with the F3 for the foreseeable future I am finding it harder to find F3 centric posts and information as the F5/F55 posts seem to fill this sub forum these days. Sure I understand why that's happening, but the F3 is still a very viable camera for many of us despite the new arrivals and it would be good to have a sub forum that handles just the F3 and another for the F5/F55's. The cameras are different enough in my opinion to warrant that.

What do you all think?

I don't mind them together. My big concern is through separating the F3 from the F5/F55, the traffic in the F3 forum will become small enough that it will dissuade people from going there as often as they would the F5/F55 forum. Much of what is talked about has to do with cinematography and camera support stuff that can be shared through the entire F product line.

Frankly, I think what F3 owners here should be doing is spending more time creating forum content specific to their camera. Sony intends to keep the camera as part of the F product shelf, we should be doing our part to promote our tool so it doesn't become irrelevant.

If you want to see how isolating the F3 from the F5/F55 promotion juggernaut just head over to the Sony Forum and have a look there.

My F3 is sorted now and I have every intention of making a lot more money from it. Promoting our tool is part of making that a reality, in my view.

Andrew. +1

I'm all for having the old F3 forum back. The other Fs are not even out and the most active F3 forum (dvxuser) is diluted with tests and speculation.

I'd vote to keep them merged, I want to stay abreast of developments with the new cameras, but also a lot of the F3 Braintrust appear to be upgrading - so I'd rather be able to ask for advice in the subforum they'll be visiting.

Seems like it would be a simple fix to add functionality to only display certain labels, in this case only show F3 post when selected from above.

I believe cinema5d's forum has something like that. Little icons of each camera under the Sony section, and when you select one or more of those icons it only displays forum posts pertinent to the selections.

I'm not suggesting a redesign of dvxuser, but maybe some way to display only certain cameras would be cool.

In any case do what many have done and put F3/5/55(etc.) at the beginning of your title.

Yes, that seems to work.....I think this feature was recently added, right? You have to choose which camera system you're posting about and that now shows up as a heading. Certainly helps.

Note at bottom of F3/F5/F7/F55 section you can filter all the posts by a prefix you select, so you can look at just the camera related posts you want.

Thanks Dennis, I think this fix does the job....so, keep the forum as is.
Maybe someone up there was listening to us?

This has been there all along, but is only useful when the use of prefixes are implemented.

For example in the marketplace its always been there, you can filter by "WTB" or "WTS" making it easier to look at only the stuff you want.

I don't know if it's always been there Dennis, checking back it seems that the prefixes for the F3 / F5 F55 have only been implemented late last year......but anyway perhaps I should have paid better attention before starting this thread. As it is, I now agree that the combined forum works just fine, with the filter even better.
Thanks again for pointing all this out.
Peter

yeah sorry I meant the option would automatically appear on any page once the use of prefixes are implemented.

The new prefix system however only recently became mandatory to pick one, up until a few weeks ago you didn't have to pick any one of them - now you do.

So how do we post generic posts applicable to all F's ?

:(

I just added a little plugin to make your lives a little easier. You can now click on an actual prefix on the list of threads...

i.e. "F3: New Subforum for F3?"... if you click the f3, it will give you just the threads with that prefix. If you click it again, it will return it to its default state. (This does the same thing as what starcentral described above, except without the need for using the menu.

On the notion of there sometimes being a topic that is more general, and not specific to one of the cameras... We don't really want to leave an option to NOT use a prefix, b/c people tend to not use them if we do. But, if we added a "general", or a "news" prefix or something like that, would that solve this problem?

That'd work just fine I think Jason. Cheers
