New Stu Maschwitz short - Chapter 12: After the Subway (Shot on the 5DMKII)

Hey all,

Back in December Stu got in touch with my friend Eric about performing some stunts in the Bay Area, and as it turns out they're almost neighbors. So we just got together for a few hours and shot this test fight in Stu's garage with his loaner 5D Mark II, with an ABSURDLY low level of light. Results are neat, and showcase the camera's strengths and weaknesses quite well.

Eh...I like Stu's books and tips but as a filmmaker I say eh. I've seen way and I mean way better stuff on Vimeo from the 5d mark II, i'm sure this will turn into a love fest for this short but...eh.

Already a lovefest in the YouTube Comments. 30P and Non Controllable shutter, ugh.

that all ends April 26th. >=D

You know what gets me about those comments, its mostly people running around shooting with HV20's. Now I have nothing against that cam as I own it, and HF10, HF100 and i'm sure i'll try out some of the other incarnations. But you want to talk about work arounds? Hell the pull down on those things is annoying in itself and while they are nice for what they are they aren't even close to the mk II or any other cam above the 2g mark. I think I said it in another post, you can take that Rebel credo stuff to far...indie film at this level is always a work around. Kholi...what the hell are you getting ready to buy? I know when I see One Who Scribbles put items up for sale, there is a purchase to be made :)

Dang, too bad you guys thought this was a downer. I'll admit the 1/30 shutter makes me pretty furious, especially from an action choreographer's standpoint. It tends to turn fast moving people and cameras into amorphous blobs. Same with Michael Mann's 1/24 Viper silliness.

Like I told Stu before, maybe next time we'll have a cam with better manual controls (or a 5D with updated firmware, perchance? hmm), a lighting kit, and more than 3 hours to shoot :)

5d firmware is not what I'm talking about.

GH1 is.

April 26th is a date specific to the gh1 and my hands.

Sorry Shauntron. Let us back to Stus work and the mkii.

Can't wait to contribute to the subway short thing going on.

Boo, Hiss ! :)

Do post your impressions, though. it'll be easy to get that camera over here, and I do own 2 excelent lenses for the 4/3 system, so maybe I'll join you...

But I need to see the encoding part of the equation. Report back, Kholi!

I liked it a lot!

Quite a bit actually!

For what it was it was perfect! It did indeed show the strengths and weaknesses of the 5D under those particular conditions.

The actions was excellent! Very excellent!

I've actually played Judo with one of the guys a few times and they do have some real life skills that translate well to the screen. (And just and FYI, I crushed them just as I would crush nearly all of you! lol...)

But in all seriousness this was very well done and is indeed just a glimpse into the future tools of lightweight low cost excellent independent film making!
