New SONY plugin for XAVC and SRMaster for FCPX

Apple no longer makes updates for FCP7. Or shall I say rarely.

I hear ya but is the codec compatibility with FCP7 something Sony can address via a log & transfer plug-in or is it something that Apple would HAVE to do also? I know FCPX is the way "forward" for Apple but every client of mine from small to huge who uses FCP is still on 7.

Great but what about FCP 7?..

FCP7 is a EOL product...it's going to break eventually with some future OS X update. Could be next one, could be years. I doubt very much you're going to get an XAVC update for 7.

However, I believe Sony has released a QT codec for SR, and got that working in FCP7 right before X was announced.

Their days doing this are very numbered. I hope they're busy planning what their moving to, you can't sit still for long while Avid, Adobe and Apple get on with the rest of their lives.

I would not be surprised to see some enterprising soul write a L&T or conversion program for FCP 7. I would doubt Sony would put the resources into FCP 7 despite the continued significant user base. And yes, eventually some update will break it and all we'll be left with is memories of life before the bomb.

There's already a plugin for the SR Codec for FCP7, it gives you native drag-and-drop functionality with the .mxf files, which is really nice - but playback and editing cuts will probably still give you a bit of grief/require transcoding unless you've got a really fast machine.

Fingers crossed the files can be integrated smoothly and natively for drag-and-drop editing without compromise on newer NLEs - if not I fear I'm still going to want to attach a prores recorder to these cams, which would be a bit of a 2-steps forward, 1-step back scenario.

It looks like this time the workflow will be available at launch of F5 and F55.
And yes plugins for AVID and Adobe are out of Beta stage as well.

Great news. I hope that Blackmagic will get Resolve done up so it can accept the format natively. While they are at it, it would be good it they rolled in compatibility which XDCAM EX footage without relying on the near useless Calibrated[Q] MP4-EX Decode plugin

The Resolve team is so on it with every other issue, I'd be surprised if they weren't working on it already.

Those guys seem to be the current kings of getting amazing things working fast.

Agreed Nate. I have been incredibly impressed with the software dev team on Resolve, however, it sure would be great if they made using XDCAM EX footage easy. I know they consider it a proxy codec but practically speaking it would make life a lot easier for those us that use the Sony EX line of video cameras. I've been on Windows based machines now for about 6 months so maybe XDCAM EX works out of the box on Mac Resolve machines.

Another big endorsement for the Resolve team here. We've just shot a little test film with a prototype F55 and they've got Resolve working with F55 raw already. They've totally saved our bacon to be honest. We'll be testing it in anger when we grade our F55 test next week. I don't imagine it'll be long before they get everything working.
