Amid the flurry of excitement over the new NEX-EA50, Sony have quietly announced something rather exciting IMHO.
Simple idea: build a memory card that has two cells - choose to use both sequentially so it's one big chip, or to use them in parallel so you get an instant backup.
Now, I've not yet experienced a chip issue on a shoot, but it's a matter of time and odds. For the FS100/700 (and yes the EA50) you can invest in their 128GB memory pack, or you can go the whole hog and record simultaneously to the internal chip and an external recorder. But this chip does provide a certain level of 'risk abatement' (Sony quotes a reduction to 1/100,000th, which sounds reassuring).
The fact that the chips are waterproof (!), dust proof, shock proof and unaffected by magnetism (the latter being true for most media in this class) is also reassuring - hands up how many have accidentally had a card go through the main laundry wash?
I haven't found a pricing guide, I bet they'll be a lot more than standard cards, but these cards also have a system to let you know when they're wearing out (yes they do) and Sony's launching an app that helps rescue footage when things go really tits up (accidentally deleting footage).
Not quite SxS, but maybe enough to make me consider switching, or at least having a few cards for interviews and the like.
