Re: New Sony HDV Cam

The PD170 has its own audio issues, including a hum whenever the LCD panel is open (IIRC). I think they're close to having it fixed, if it's not completely fixed already.

The Pro version of the Sony is rumored for Jan-Feb 2005, at a cost of around $7000.

Re: New Sony HDV Cam

So the PD170's audio is as good as the DVX should the audio/LCD problem be fixed?

Re: New Sony HDV Cam

I don't know about that. All depends on the electronics inside. Just because something has XLR's, doesn't mean it has good audio (look at the JVC HD10 for an example).

Yes. The XL1 s/n ratio was slightly better than the Sony, but still had very present hiss. However, the dynamic range in the XL1 was far superior to the TRV900, probably helped by the XL1's more-focused and higher-quality on-board mic. (yes, we used camera mics exclusively. I know, I know- that's the kiss of death, but what do you expect when you have to shoot a feature in four days?) I was able to get much cleaner noise reduction on the XL1 footage.

I remember reading a brochure on the PD170 back in January which stated that they increased the audio s/n ratio by 6 dB over the PD150. That's an improvement, yes, but according to an analysis by DV Magazine, the PD150 had a s/n ratio of between 52-58 dB. If they increased it by 6 dB, that puts it at 58-64 dB, still considerably lower than the DVX100's 72dB. And if you don't think 10dB is a big difference, remember that decibels are calculated logarithmically; so at 62 dB, hiss level will be approx. 2x louder than at 72dB.

Re: New Sony HDV Cam

also just because it says Sony doesn't mean it's good. Had 3 Sony's (8, Hi8, miniDV) All good for a while... all sitting on my shelf dead. Never going to buy sony camcorders again. I don't even want to get into it.

Re: New Sony HDV Cam

I had 2 PD150...

got quickly tired of always searching in the menus, and the dynamic range was so crappy, not to mention the 2nd ND filter always seemed to blur the picture even with the iris at 5.6 ...

the resolution was so so...hyper contrasty, bad dynamic range CCDs...yek ! :P

when i first tried the DVX, it was a gift !

...rich colors, better dynamic range, easy to play with the external controls, flexibility of the 6 programmable scene files...

if Sony just goes only for the HD resolution but keep this unadjustable kind of hypercontrasty look, i wont go for it.
