NEW: Sony HandyCam NXCAM with E-Mount

I was at the London event. Had hands on with F3 and spoke on camera to the NXCAM designer. http://philipbloom.net/2010/11/17/f3nxcam/

One thing I have been told is the camera WON'T be switchable between 24p and 25p. 24p for US, 25p for Europe. I told them this HAS To change for it be considered by myself as a viable tool. I don't want region locked cameras.

No nothing about the output yet.
The Demo clip they shot with a beta unit of the NEXcam showed the same quality as the F3 clips.
For me the codec is still a deal breaker, but if they come up with a uncompressed output module, it starts getting interesting.

Is that footage online?

If its €6,000 it'll probably be around $6,000 US -considering that the Euro price has a nice hefty VAT included. NEX-VG10 is €2,000 and is $2,000 in the US. So €1=$1 seems to be a fair guess.

But its mid-2011, very vague. And who know what the exchange rates will be like by then, the American dollar is free falling due to quantitative easing, developing nations are gong through a round of competitive devaluation, the Japanese yen is sky rocketing, and Europe still has a question of sovereign debt as shown with Ireland this week. By the time it finally releases who knows where the pricing will be.

Either way competition is good, and this camera takes nothing away from the AF100's accomplishments. When this NXCAM comes out I'm sure people will find creative ways of being negative and nitpicky.

Kinda agree for the pricing, generally same figure in the US as in Europe, except we are talking $, not euros.

On another note, there is an old saying in technology:
If it is due in 6 months that means they have begun working on the technology for it, if they say a year that means they are considering getting around to working on it.

Hey thanks for that Philip. A no brainer. Amazing they would still try to pull that one. Anyone that works internationally would run for the exits. Good we have some advocates out there for us today.

idiots.... when will they learn?
the more they resist market forces by imposing 20th Century region codes, the more impetus for the hackers to unlock them.
the fools!!!!!
I'm about to unlock my HV20..... region codes and frame rate lock-outs be hanged!!!!!!

Absolutely agreed 10000% the picture quality, dynamic range and resolution looked super pristine and the skin tone rendering is fantastic ! Sony really hit it out of the park with the F3. Let's hope tht the NXcam will inherit some of it's big brother's DNA.

They have definitely created a very capable camera. Do realize that this has obviously been professionally graded, they used super high end glass and external recording. In other words, the stuff you see is basically as good as you can possibily get out of it. Don't get the illusion that if you buy this cam, your images will look like this. Most of us probly have a long ways to go before we will hit that quality.

I like the box design compared to the AF100. That evf on the AF looks stuck on the top.

I guess you kind of get use to the way these odd cams look, when I first saw the AF100, I thought it was odd looking, actually kind of ugly. But after seeing it more and more, it's kind of grown on me. Were so use to seeing the "traditional " camcorder, anything that strays from the pack is strange at first glance.

I don' t see it the same way. I have seen many talented dp use their dslr to do nearly as good job as this or may I say better at 720p vimeo resolution and quality. I am sure if you get both on a big screen at 1080p the f3 footage will clearly be better. This was a very dull gray day. If you have been in london you know what dull means, so the dynamic range has not been stretch and being in 720p vimeo tents to level the quality of different camera. Apart from focus and breathing, good still lense camera can resolve much more than 2k and cover much bigger sensor. I think the dslr revolution has showed that in many ways the photographic equipment can hold its own at much much lower price. Add some rings for focus pulling, distance marking and longer rotation for focus and sell it ten times the price (the market is much lower also). Most people at first thought that those super high cost pl mount zoom where covering full 35 still frame camera to see that most were only aps size (s35), and would not event cover the sensor in their camera as there canon or nikon lense. I am not saying that their is no difference, but the hype and exponential price difference has nothing to do with actual image capture. So i am sure that someone with a good set of lens from canon or nikon, an external recorder like the nano mini, would easily get the above type of image, if he has an eye for sure. The shot might be a bit more difficult to achieve (mostly focus pulling) but it is not as if we are looking at a Hollywood blockbuster with tons of special effect etc.

Come on, Canon - the masses await your response!!!!
I can feel it in my bones: Canon will make a solid-state HV20-ish camera with APS-C sensor and universal lens mount for around $2k, professional version akin to XF series to follow later :)

To be honest Paul I kind of have this opinion as well. Canon may actually release a HV20-ish APS-C camcorder to test the water more. Then 2012 release their Pro version. Only time will tell.

If Canon doesn't fix their sensor, I would not buy it. Even the HV30 can show rainbow moire, as I own one and have done it. I'd ABSOLUTELY LOVE a Canon, minus the moire problem, but just don't see them moving to fix this.

I cannot wait to see more about the NXCAM though, it sounds REALLY promising to me. For now, I've got an AF100 on the way.

The Sony is probably going to be a body only with everything else sold separate. I can't wait to see those mystery pics.

I think Canon will continue to improve the video features on their DSLR line. Personally, while an APS-C dedicated video camera from Canon sounds nice, I'd actually prefer that they make the DSLR's better first, as we'll already have the AF100, and in the not too distant future, the Sony NXCAM with interchangeable lenses.

Even though I plan on getting an AF100, down the line I'd still like to have a fully capable photo/video camera like a 5D mkIII or maybe a 7D mkII with stuff like: an audio level dial on the body, a cleaner codec implementation, zebras, timecode counter, flip out LCD, etc... (as these seem to be the most likely upgrades for the next Canon DSLR line).
