NEW: Sony HandyCam NXCAM with E-Mount

Wow, it is about the same price than the af-100 and using the same chip as the f3 as guessed above. Did they say anything about the hdmi or hd-sdi output?

No nothing about the output yet.
The Demo clip they shot with a beta unit of the NEXcam showed the same quality as the F3 clips.
For me the codec is still a deal breaker, but if they come up with a uncompressed output module, it starts getting interesting.

10bit 422 not enough?
theres no pleasing you LOL

recent reprots says its not the same f3 sensor. perhaps a watered down version or from a nex version

As Danielvilliers said it'll probably call it different sensors due to marketing reasons. The branding of sensors are generally fairly dubious since its hidden in a OEM supply chain, particularly for Sony. I good example is Sony's own IMX line of sensors, we know its been supplied to half dozen other manufacturers and sold under dozens of brands, but the original source is usually not discussed or heavily advertised. Also, what constitutes a different sensor is also nebulous, but we can assume that the underlining technology and design should be fairly similar to the F3.

As far as the NEX, it really don't think it'll be a high-megapixel dSLR sensor that would require line-skipping to get it down to 1080p which introduces aliasing. If it is I don't know why they would bother making it an S35 sized sensor, they could keep it as APS-C.

If they are going to redesign the sensor to S35 anyway, logically they would also make the photosites bigger so they don't need to line-skip ans waste photosites that aren't going to be exposed. Aside from that it'll have classic Exmor designs that Sony likes to implement like Column-Parallel A/D Conversion, etc. Aside from that we already have a camcorder using the NEX sensor in the form of the VG10 and that is 1/3rd the price of this camera (and comes with an expensive lens).

O.K. here it goes - straight from the horses mouth - aka the Sony Press Event here in Munich today.

They called it the "35mm World" Strategy and Products
EXMOR CMOS Super35-Sensor, same as the F3 they said - no aps-c.

I assumed this was the "pro" version of the NEX-VG10. You could easily call the NEX-VG10 sensor "Super 35" if you wanted. The fact that it records AVCHD absolutely makes this an AF-100 competitor.

However -- what POSTMASTER has reported certainly sounds exciting. If the sensor is, as POSTMASTER wrote: "same as the F3 they said" -- then this may actually be something that can rain on Panasonic's parade. Possibly. I also noted somewhere in there "1080/60P"

Regarding price -- the AVCHD thing will absolutely put it in the same ballpark as the AF-100.

I assume the big idea from Sony here is to hit people like me, ready to buy the AF-100 if the initial reports aren't dreadful, with the headache that if I had waited a few weeks I could have had...

This is certainly an AF100 competitor, that it's hazy on the details makes it a little suspect in timing -- FUD (will it be better? how much will it be crippled compared to the F3?)

2011 is going to be a bang up year in terms of new cameras both being released and coming into full maturation. If you want to shoot shallow DOF, there's finally going to be a lot of options. The real answer is to shoot with what you've got, buy when you need it, and rent when it's appropriate.

Let's put this in some perspective. The new Sony camera is a box without viewfinder, for a reported 6K euro (roughly ~$8K, although likely to be cheaper). The AF100 is, except for the lens, a complete camera: viewfinder, two XLRs, etc., for under $5K. The only known thing about it that sucks is the 8-bit HD-SDI/HDMI. If they changed that to 10-bit or *cough* 12-bit, it might be the better deal.

The demo clips of the F3 they showed (recorded on hdcam-sr) where nothing but breathtaking.

Absolutely agreed 10000% the picture quality, dynamic range and resolution looked super pristine and the skin tone rendering is fantastic ! Sony really hit it out of the park with the F3. Let's hope tht the NXcam will inherit some of it's big brother's DNA.

O.K. NOW we are talking:

It's an NXCAM product, recording AVCHD at up to 24Mb/s onto SDHC / MS media
It records 2 channel uncompressed audio
It features removable lenses and is likely to be supplied with a Sony / Minolta manufactured zoom lens as standard.
It will be supplied with a PL lens mount adaptor
It will have uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2 output through either HDMI or HD-SDI (or perhaps both) allowing the use of higher quality recording through a third party device.

It will cost arount €6,000
We'd expect this to ship Spring / Summer 2011

I guess I can live with uncompressed 10bit 4:2:2

I'm so glad my patience prevailed in regards to an AF100 preorder. It was a narrow win for responsibility, whew!

The game is just changing too much at the moment to drop over $5K before January or February.

I'm sure most professionals will pay off the AF100 in one job. By the time the Sony hits the streets next summer, you can always sell the Pana for still good money.

Agreed 10,000%. Buy it when you need it, put it to work, and sell it if something more suitable comes along.

depending on how business go and how this cam by sony prices, id probably buy one if it hits all my checklist. right now im still set on buying an af100

Absoultely, but I can certainly squeeze another 6 months or so out of my DSLRs if there is something worth waiting for. I'm in the market for a new personal cam for my side projects, not what I'm shooting at work. When it comes to my personal gear, I've gotta be really cautious.

5000 here and there adds up quick.

Yeah, but I think the msrp of the af-100 in euros was 5800, so you can expect this sony base price much lower than $8k. Perhaps less than $ 1000 difference and many have been clamoring for a af-100 with 10 hd-sdi output for even higher prices. So Many will find value into it. A lot of indies coming from dslr will already have a set of accessories, like external monitor, microphone etc ... a a 10 bit capable, s35 size sensor and perhaps better lowlight and dynamic range (as it seems to have the f3 sensor) will make it a much better choice.

If its €6,000 it'll probably be around $6,000 US -considering that the Euro price has a nice hefty VAT included. NEX-VG10 is €2,000 and is $2,000 in the US. So €1=$1 seems to be a fair guess.

But its mid-2011, very vague. And who know what the exchange rates will be like by then, the American dollar is free falling due to quantitative easing, developing nations are gong through a round of competitive devaluation, the Japanese yen is sky rocketing, and Europe still has a question of sovereign debt as shown with Ireland this week. By the time it finally releases who knows where the pricing will be.

Either way competition is good, and this camera takes nothing away from the AF100's accomplishments. When this NXCAM comes out I'm sure people will find creative ways of being negative and nitpicky.
