New Sony FS E-mount 4K camcorder to be announced at IBC

With the DVX200 coming, maybe Sony is trying to steal some of their thunder. hehehe.

We probably know everything about this camera expect for one thing, the media type thus the recording format, will it be XAVC-I 10bit 4:2:2 4K like the FS7 or 4K XAVC-S 100mbps 4:2:0 like the A7s. The former solution would mean SD cards and the
later XQD.

I think they'll go with 10bit just for Canon.

The outline looks like a C300 at first, but if you think about how the outline on the FS7 pic would be, it's not that different

I think it won't be 10 bit, all the logic in the world tells me 8bit XAVC-S as it is going to be their Entry level large sensor 4K camcorder into the FS line. PXW_X70 doesnt really count as its 1 inch and fixed lens so totally diff market. For Sony the new FS whatever they call it FS3 or FSX is going to be a C100 killer in the sense that they need a sub $5K large sensor camcorder that is competitive and features their lates tech. Wont be surprised to see 5-axis IBIS in the new camera.

Definitely 4K XAVC-S 100 Mb/s though, wont go XAVC-L

The #Nolimits - refers (at least in my mind) to two things - full frame and low light = a7s sensor or derivative for video. This new camera is basically sticking the A7s/A7r ii video performance into a camcorder body, hence the moniker -No more limits. It can also mean S35 crop mode and FF , as well as Slow motion - in camera only - as this will be HDMI based version (no SDi, no RAw, definitely SDXC cards)

The good thing is - save money on media, and not have to buy an external recorder. It's an out of the box solution. No add-ons needed. Except for a lens.

I think it's 50-50 that it will be 8-bit or 10-bit. It can be 8-bit if they go the Canon route, but keeping the FS700 in the line means it has to have something better than that. It can be FF, it can be 10-bit. Or maybe slog3 for better DR is enough.

Maybe, we'll know for sure on Friday, but I think the FS700 is EOL - will probably be discontinued by end of the year to make room for the new guy, which should be out in October.

I thought we were talking about the outline in the picture?

The outline only reveals that there will be a rear EVF and a top handle with an LCD at front.

Yes identical to an outline of a c300 if drawn, but of course the design can be a completely new one aside from the EVF and LCD position.

Now for speculation:

I expect an C300 like design but the back is not used for operation (battery, connectors and EVF) with a left side of an fs7 buttons, Top handle and LCD from the fs7. So compared to a C300 it will be narrower from side to side and longer from rear to front , for an fs7 left side panel configuration, (C100/300 is shorter from back to front, the body is as short as only the grip)

Canon-C100-4-of-4.jpg

Left panel is not going to so narrow, more fs7 like.

Like a hybrid, a smaller fs7 taking a shape closer to C300 in the evf, lcd, grip designs (handheld camcorder)

Maybe best described a smaller, more oval F3.

A trusted source at SAR says that Sony has a prototype with the a7S sensor on a video camera body. Link. It may or may not be what this announcement is about.

some time ago I ran some tests to see what would be the potential of this sensor. Link. My conclusion was:
The a7S could shoot slog2 at ISO 400 (elecronicallally-same-as-no-PP-ISO 100). It would have the same DR as it has now, maybe a bit more because of less noise in the shadows (half a stop?).
With the same settings (elecronicallally-same-as-no-PP-ISO 100) and slog3, it would be ISO 1600 and it would have around two stops better DR than it currently has (1.5 because of slog3, 0.5 because of less noise in shadows). I would overexpose it by one or two stops, and treat it as ISO 800 or 400. If it is kept at 8-bit, on the upper half of the curve it goes from 29 values per stop of light to 20 values per stop of light.

That would explain why they haven't updated firmware of a7s.

A99 MK II has been bandied about for close to a year now but it surely looks like Sony is going to kill the Alpha line (let it wither, if you will) but obviously nothing is stopping them from making an A99 type body with an E-mount or even a fixed lens. On the other hand, SAR's source isn't aware when it will be announced and we sort of know when the camerain this thread is going to be announced (and some folks here know more than others), which makes me think that this A7S camcorder will be a different product.

With the cat half out of the bag, what's the over&under of someone leaking most of the specs? I say, three days or sooner.

I hate to quote myself but a pretty good call, huh?

Yet to be determined!

There was a rumor a while back that the next A7s will have a design similar to XC10. What if this video camera is what they were referring to? In terms of price I'd much rather it be a XC10 competitor than C100 ii or C300 ii competitor. But I expect it'll be closer to the C100 mkii. If they could price it like the xc10, at $2,500, I think it would be huge seller.

If they could give it away for free it would be an even bigger hit.

New Sony F cam Friday is S35, not FF. 4K internally, but 8 bit XAVC-L (note the L) 100 Mbit max. No HFR as far as I can tell, 30fps max in 4K. Looks like a baby FS7. Price will be between old FS700 and current FS7, likely $5,000-6,500 USD. Differentiation on FS7 is much better CODEC, higher frame rates (incl 60p 4K), option for RAW and ProRes, bigger build.

That is not an exciting price range anymore. Either way less than $5000 if it is skimpy on the specs, and $10K if it delivers everything we want.
