FS7: New Sony F7 XDCAM 4K Super 35mm Camcorder

To me, the whole Sony look thing is in the past and is now just a myth perpetuated by people who don't use the cameras. S-Log is super neutral and really lacks a distinctive look (like Canon, Alexa, BMC, etc..). The look is what you make it in post, which is what I like and prefer. I've had great images out of S-Log this past year. Pretty much every studio and network project I've shot for, everyone was thrilled with the footage as they can make their own look from S-Log.

Nobody has ever mentioned "Sony look."

Yeah, too each their own, of course. Nobody said that you couldn't get "great images", and you might even like that look which is THE best thing in the world, but to my eyes those images might move a little too smooth or feel a little too artificial. Save if it's coming from an F35 and *sometimes* an F65.

Also, saying that Alexa or Blackmagic lack a look because of LOG? Is that what you're saying?

I guess... it's one of those things where if you can't see it you can't see it. But, if you like the look you're getting that's the most important aspect.

Before someone tries to kneecap me, I think the camera looks and sounds like an amazing offer. And I'm sure the images will be GREAT! Post up!

Yesterday I tried to put this on the DJI Ronin and it was nearly impossible. Even with a pancake lens, the handle disassembled, and a BP-U30 battery, it was really hard to get this camera to balance on the gimbal without it's long body dropping forward, back, or side to side. Anyone else who achieves this is an absolute winner in my book!

Anything new on this? Have you had success mounting/balancing and operation a Ronin with any other cameras?

My plan is for my FS7 to be stripped down and pretty much live to fly on the Ronin. Until now, I've very successfully flown my 60d and had no issues mounting and balancing it.

I've only spent a few hours trying to balance it yesterday and I had no luck. It's heavier than I thought even when it's stripped down. I think for the Ronin, it's meant to fly DSLR's or heavy compact form factors like the RED. But The FS7 seems too awkward for the Ronin because of it's long frame. I've had luck flying a 5D mk III, a Black Magic Cinema/4k camera, and even a C300 on it, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it with the FS7. I'll try again some time soon.

Actually, I think BMC has a very distinctive look and it looks great. Maybe since I'm from a post background, but I just prefer something less distinctive, more vanilla so I can make the look more in post.

I would say LOG have a distinctive look and that when graded it looks different to than when you grade linear or raw footage. S-log have one look C-log another and BM-log is different to the others. To me they all look and grade fine but they are different.

I used to hear this about Red all the time. The idea that 'Rust And Bone' shares an intrinsically similar look to Prometheus or Total Recall or Girl with the Dragon Tattoo because they were shot on Epic is laughable.

Good tools in the right hands having been tested for the aesthetic and shot for the post workflow you have in mind will 99 times out of 100 yield great results.

SLog (at 10bit anyway) does IMO back one into some corners in a way that linear does not.

It is an intelligent trade off but IMO does lead to a look, one that is not personally floating my boat right now.

Of course the FS7 does have the usual Sony settings, of which I find Cine1 (the most linear) to be the nicest..

Same with a lot of the LUT-based grades I'm seeing on Vimeo. Everything is crushed and all the tones are off, but that's not the fault of the camera or the shooting system - just inexperience or 'interesting' creative choices down the line.

Not working for me on my SmallHD DP6 or my LG computer monitor.

It would seem then, that Sony followed the similar implementation of HDMI on their F5/F55 as the FS7 - that is that it uses PsF which means that many many legacy devices (monitors, viewfinders, video transmitters, etc..) will not support it. The PMW-F3 supported 60i over HDMI in 24p mode by enabling a 2-3 pull down option in the menu... but no dice on the F5/F55 even though many including myself have been making a lot of noise about this: http://community.sony.com/t5/F5-F55/When-will-23-98-24p-mode-be-fixed-on-HDMI/m-p/162171#M4895

The good news, if you can call it that, is that any frame rate multiple of 50 or 60 fps will work over HDMI. ie. 25p, 29.97p, 50p and 60p no problems. It's only 23.98 or 24p that is not functional....

So if you are counting on HDMI for any purpose, you may have to address that solution with another solution. From what I know, a few manufacturers were able to introduce a firmware update in order to support it. Zacuto was one of them for their VF, and I believe TVlogic. But many others who have done testing, including myself were unable to get about a dozen devices using HDMI to work.

If this concerns you, go to Sony forums and make some noise.

So my 7" Ruige monitor which worked perfectly on my FS700 isn't likely to function with the FS7? Hmmmmm....

You will have to test it but if it doesn't support PsF, then likely it will not work. Some cameras spread 24p over 60i to make it compatible with most devices utilizing HDMI.

I tested 4 LCD monitors, none worked so I sprung up $1300 for a new SDI monitor which I love but that's not the point. Oh I did test my 50" OLED Sony TV and it worked.

Thanks $ony.

Yes, and the same goes for REDCODE IMO, although it's supposed to be linear it certainly doesn't behave that way.

Also, why does "You can make footage look great" keep coming up? In the context of "Does this camera have an inherent look?" whether it looks great or not comes second. Nobody said RED can't look great, or Sony, etc. Not sure what the Rust and Bone reference gets at.

ALL that said, just can't wait to see footage from the camera.

(have to put this again, not all Sony cameras included.)
