FS7: New Sony F7 XDCAM 4K Super 35mm Camcorder

I have a new Metabones Ultra adapter sitting here and a long list of Nikons (and a new Rokinon Cine DS 85 w/Nikon mount) that work great on my F5 - anticipating nothing less on the FS7.

With the issues at hand I'm thinking of cancelling my preorder and wait until these things are worked out. To me it's essential to shoot with Canon L lenses and if it doesn't work it's better to continue my F3 journey.

Sorry Liam . In my own case I was interested in the zooms especially the. 105-24 and the 70-200 . Don't own canon primes and was considering going Rockinon anyway .
So my main concern was optics .
Did you get the standard metabones also ? I was going to do that as well to get 2 Lenses in one . Unlikely the mechanics would work in that if they didn't in the ultra though
you can't use your primes at all on the camera at this point ?

damn - at this point I'm kinda glad I didn't get the 1st shipment so you guys can work out the gotchas first !

You'll be fine with the Rokinons and the zooms, though the zooms will be a bit clunky when changing aperture. Optically the Ultra is great. I can use the primes wide open or a stop down, but that's it.

How clunky are the aperture changes? i/6 step increments or only 1/3?

The only reason I'm making this change from Nikon (which I prefer for the manual step less iris even with G lenses & adapters) is for IS. But i'm not excited by steppy iris. I could go with just a few IS Canon lenses and keep the rest Nikon , but I would prefer all my lenses focused in the same direction.

Now I'm worried... but also confused. Does the Metabones (non-speedbooster version) not work with the FS7? What exactly is it that's not working with the Speedbooster?

Thanks.

I can report that the metabones EF-nex smart adapter version IV (the latest and only that) with the latest Metabones FW works fine with the Canon lenses I have tried including the 24-105 and 70-200 F2.8 IS mark II, as well of course all the Rokinon lenses I threw at it. And by fine I mean iris change (and F stop display on VF) and IS both work fine. I have not used any Canon primes however, but I use Zeiss FE and Rokinon primes now.

While I have not personally used the combo, I have seen the Metabones Mark IV working with Canon zooms at Sony.

So I downloaded the original ungraded file of this:vimeo.com/110498281

and applied the Film Convert Sony F55 SLog2 SGamut Lut to it.

Really nice skin tones:

The girl's color balance was off, so I did a quick three way cc then applied the same lut:

Really digging the tones this camera can produce.

I've emailed the Film Convert people and suggested they develop a profile for SLog3, although the SLog2 profile worked well for the night shots of NYC skyline I graded and Matt's grade certainly looks good.

Just finished ingesting all of my footage from the Doritos Spec I shot today and this camera was a joy to use. Still no histograms :( I love the ergonomics and handling. I was able to get by on two 64gb XQD S Series cards while shooting UHD and 180fps.

One question, when I start to grade Cine-EI and add a LUT at ISO 2000 the image looks quite noisy in the shadows! Anyone else notice this? Anyway to fix it? I'll post the video soon once I finish editing.

Cine-EI means SLog3 gamma, which is shadows lifted by 3 stops.
The LUT should bring these lifted shadows down again and the noise
will disappear.
In CINE-EI noise suppression is off: Must do this in post.

Hi Erik,

That's what I figured, however the ungraded footage doesn't look as noisy as you can see here.

Here's the footage with a LUT and grading. Not sure why this is so much noisier. I'm grading with FCPX LUT Utility VisionColor Impulz Kodak Vision 3 50D.

I know it's hard to tell by just images alone so I'll try to post the footage asap. Thanks for your help.

Try the Sony LUTs in Resolve. Erik is absolutely correct that SLog3 gives you a 3 stop lift in shadows making for ungraded footage which seems noisy. The Sony LUTs should be aware of the characteristics of SLog3.

FCPX is sadly not the appropriate tool, as the LUT functionality is
still in an early stage. You can just apply LUTs from apple, which can't
be adjusted properly.

It's much, much better in Resolve.

Hey Steve, I invested in Neat Video because I too found the same thing with certain shots. If you use slog3 and rate the camera lower by a stop or two it helps. NR is suppose to be coming back to the CineEI mode in F5/55 this December so hopefully it makes it over to the F7 as well...

This would seem to be 'exposure error' - but without the correct toolset.. LUTs + WFM/Histo that is not really the operator being in error as just taking a punt on how the screen looks is not really good enough..

I'm pretty sure film convert implemented slog3 earlier this year for F5/55 so I would assume that F5 and F7 would be interchangeable...

Surely however FC will add one specific for the F7 soon.
