FS7: New Sony F7 XDCAM 4K Super 35mm Camcorder

I did some test with the a7s and the F55. the footage from the A7s have this cheap feeling DSLR look that is not nice at all. I think sony do something on purpose.
Cameras like the GH4 have a nice beautiful cinematic image a lot more close to the image produce by the F55.
Not sure I agree with that to be honest... I'm quite happy with what I've gotten out of mine :)

I talking about the final image, Do you think you will tell the difference between a FS7 and a a7s looking at the raw footage (Apart of the DOF)? because I think they will be pretty close.
Buying Sony for so long I pretty sure they will make the FS7 final image look like the A7S.
F3 and F55 are very close on final image quality and them you have the FS700 which I think is a horrible image. I think the FS7 would be more close to FS700 rather than F55. I really hope to be wrong but sony always do the same

I saw the FS7 4K film on a 4K projector at Abelcine, I was pleasantly surprised by the image quality. Looked way better than the vimeo version.

I would really like this FS7 would be a nice camera is just F%#@ Sony never deliver a good product at the right price. I have serious doubt the image will get any closer to the F55

apples and oranges ...

And don't think it was even considered that it would come close to the F55. It's a 9K $ camera, why should it? If you were hoping for a F55 image I think you missed the whole point of the FS7.

Having seen a demo today, I think you may be very, very surprised. At least very close to the F5 - which it shares the same chip with.

With XAVC as codec, and features such as the s-log modes it really is truly astonishing what you're getting for the money. It seemed that in base image quality it's pretty well identical to the F5 - which shouldn't be a surprise. I'm sure the F5 remains the better camera overall, but it's more in terms of functionality such as the separate side screen, and the connectivity options are more "professional" - such as the F5 taking the more pro viewfinders. But it's horses for courses - the "less pro" nature of the FS7 may actually be seen as an ADVANTAGE by some (with tighter budgets!) in not needing to spend as much money on some accessories. As example, I'd say batteries - the FS7 takes the small batteries, though will take V-lock with the optional extra back.

But in image quality there doesn't seem to be anything between them.

I went to your vimeo account and was trying to understand your visual taste, Now I understand you and me have a totally diferent taste, you are more like TV, reality, discovery Channel, hallmark, kind of look I'm more in to cinematic real 35mm film kind, nothing wrong here just diferent wings so is really hard for me trying to explain something that is not real technical

Because both of those things contribute directly to it.

I think you are right probably I was hopping for something diferent

I doesn't make any sense to discuss "cinematic image" as we currently do.

If somebody says the GH4 is more close to "cinematic" than the FS7 or A7s it seems
totally ridiculous to me as the GH4 is absolutely video'ish for me.

Cinematic images don't come magically out of the camera!
You have to produce them by choosing the right light, lens, aperture, shutter, colour science
on production and in post and so on.
You can produce very nice images with the FS7 if you are able to. The S-Gamut3.cine/S-Log3
profile gives you a very nice starting point. With one of the LUTs you can easily dial in the look
you want if you took care during the shooting. Use small and cheap LEDs without a natural
colour temperature and let your highlights blow off - away is the cinematic image.

I really can't understand people complaining about non-cinematic images with cameras like the
FS7. If you really want cinematic, take alook at the F35 or F65, the Alexa, the REDs...

The FS7 will be a totally different camera. If you succeed in squeezing out the best out of the
FS7 YOU can make your footage look whatever you like it to be.

It's not the camera primarily - it's you!

Exactly.

'Cinematic image' is a hell of a lot more about the lights, set design and lens choice than the camera body which, if it does all it is says it can, will be absolutely fine to record what I need.

A lot of people these days (certainly Producers who have hired me) seem to think a 5D mk2 image shot a f1.2 with the focus always drifting in and out because the operator/AC can't maintain focus as such a ridiculous aperture is a 'cinematic image'. Whereas in actual fact, unless you know what you're doing it just looks amateurish to anyone who has half a clue. I've even had Directors constantly pushing me in the back while I am shooting handheld in order to make it look 'more real'. How I didn't punch them remains a mystery to me.

It's still early days for me and the video function on my A7s, but with my Red I have shot some incredibly cinematic looking scenes and some incredibly 'video-looking' scenes as the job and environment dictated it. Truth be told the same goes for back when I had a Canon 60D and 6D.

If the FS7 features the same sensor, framerates and codec as the F5 I will be more than happy that I can get out of it what I need.

True...

...Also true is you can create the video/reality look with the same camera. The BBC shoot Doctors and Casualty on Alexa. Neither look cinematic - they're not meant to.

Coming back to G cards or S cards in my testing it's actually not possible to reach a 400MB/s transfer speed in real life. You'll end up at about 167MB/s with most fast SSD drives or fast flash memory cards tops.

Do you think it is the reader that is the issue or just that the cards are not accurately designated/tested?

I just got a good deal on one of the Lexar Professional 168MB/s 64Gb cards. I assume that'll be fine for all framerates/bitrates.

I'm sure the cards by them selvs are cabable of higher speed but there are so many steps in transfering files that most wont see more than about 167MB/s. With the right combination of destination drive, USB 3.0 driver, SATA controller and such you can reach up to 300MB/s but then you really have to tweak or be lucky to sit on the right combination.
