FS7: New Sony F7 XDCAM 4K Super 35mm Camcorder

You don't need G cards for the FS7 but if you go for these instead of the S cards you'll have a faster transfer speed. S cards are more than enough to cope with all the FS7 can do.

Actually, now that I think of it, Juan Martinez told me S cards are adequate for all speeds. The advantage of the G cards is offload speed. That in itself could be worth the difference.

Given the modest price difference I imagine the offload speed will feel nice at the end of the day.

I think this clip has been posted and discussed earlier in this thread - though as it's now 93 pages long it's not a surprise that you missed it!

ah fair enough - It's certainly the first to give me an idea of what the clipping looks like when the camera is otherwise exposed properly, and it's nice to see it at 4k.

Edited after some more testing!

If I connect the XQD reader with a 64GB S card directly to my Surface Pro 2 I got a read speed of around 168MB/s and constant write speed at 90MB/s. I also tried a Sandisk Extreme 480GB SSD connected through the hub and going from the XQD S card to the SSD I got 168MB/s read speed and 90MB/s write speed.

In theory the 90MB/s translates to 720mb/s write speed and that's more than the 600mb/s needed for 4k 60p intra. My guess is that Sony might squeeze a even higher write speed in the actual camera. So there's headroom in the highest mode on the FS7 to make full use of S cards.

Great info thanks Osslund!

With the camera released any week now I feel the calm before the storm. I have a feeling my pre-order is at least 3 weeks away although I have not gotten confirmation from my dealer. I'll try and see if I can get a date but I think even they are in the dark on the specifics from Sony.

There should soon be more videos out there as Sony will roll out the 1st batch of FS7s soon.
My local dealer here in germany doesn't know how many pieces they will get, but they should
come very soon, they said today.

I got a really good "early bird" price for the camera and for the 128GB XQD-G card too.
If anybody is located near cologne, you can PM me for further informations.

My FS100 should be sold soon.

I still don't know if the FS7 accepts 3rd party batteries like the Swit S-8U63 or if you need
to take the Sony batteries. I'd prefer the Swits as they provide one USB-power out, which
would serve my Zoom H6 and another D-Tap out for my Small HD DP4. They will be the
perfect solution if the FS7 accepts them...

The price for the new memory cards is only marginal higher than the previous N and S-card types.
And only the G-type card exists in 128GB which is not to much if you plan an all day long shooting
in 4k with all-I codec. The 128GB card accepts 25 minutes of 4k all-I 60p (600Mbit/s)... :(

Two of these cards won't you bring over they day if you like to record in best quality. You want to
choose another codec/bitrate even with the 2 biggest cards in the slots of the FS7.
I hope not only Sony, but other manufacturers too will produce bigger cards soon. I want storage close
to 1 TB, which means two 512GB cards to be on the safe side.

Holy ****! As a FS100 AVCHD shooter, these new codecs and bitrates definitely want new storage
everywhere...

Please give me a "delete last clip" button!

I saw on Dan Chung's twitter a picture posted with the Swit battery. Is it plugged into the camera power in?
