FS7: New Sony F7 XDCAM 4K Super 35mm Camcorder

Say what??? That's awesome if true! Liam was it you who mentioned that Sony planned to have numerous units available?

Yes, I was told shipping in high numbers. But don't quote me! I've been trying to get hold of my sony dealer -- no luck so far. Hopefully, he's swamped with all the kit that's been delivered...

On the F5/F55 it wasn't the LUT that removed noise reduction, it was the fact that when the camera is in CineEI mode many features are disabled like matrix, NR, etc.. to provide more of a pure signal intended for post production.

I'm still unclear on this - is the noise still removed on the LUT when you record to it? Sorry to be dense, I guess I don't know the menus so I don't know if its in Cine EI mode that one would record the LUT. Is Matrix etc also disabled when using the LUT?

Also I'm a bit confused by how bad this noise issue is. I'm coming from the F3 where in non Slog modes I feel free to shoot anywhere between +12 and -3 and never see noise. Is this different in the F5/55 (presumably FS7) or is it in only an issue when shooting Slog3?

I don't get how people can rave about SLog3 and then in the next breath say the noise levels are unacceptable. When does the noise become a problem and can't you just expose a touch more to push it down? ( I don't have mush experience working Slog).

It would be nice if they do add it back in the subsequent software maybe as a choice.

pretty sure someone confirmed LUTs can be baked in. Really, this camera is the F5/F55 for 1/2 to 1/3 the price minus a few bells and whistles.

I'm glad to have the F55, but really, the FS7 would likely deliver on 95% of the projects I work on. I mainly got the F55 for feature film work and 4K RAW so I wouldn't have to go the RED route.. but for anything less than RAW (which even the F7S can do now) this is a STEAL and I can't believe it's only $8000. Add a $500 PL mount to E mount and what else do you need?

In the presentation this morning it was mentioned that you can bake in looks. The seminar was good and it was worthwhile for me to get all of the technical stuff stuff with examples. I'm very much a visual learner.

The one thing that is still a little confusing is EI mode and the locked ISO but you can adjust gain input? If I wasn't in a hurry I would have stayed and asked about that. We kind of ran out of time.

With the monitoring luts and the choice to bake for clients with no post budget I could see myself leaving the FS7 in EI mode for all types of work and having some luts stashed with preferred coloring styles like film stocks.

If you hear anymore please post. I'm excited to put mine through its paces. To have it this weekend would be very cool.

Info from french dealer (in another thread), they said week 43, which is the next week. So I guess everything is on time.

The voice at the other end of the bat phone told me very very soon.

Yes. You can burn in LUT internally.

I found SLog3 to have some noise but I didnt shoot the material in question. Unfortunately I cant post anything.

EI mode locks to whatever the native ISO of the camera is, so if it's 2000 ISO then you are always shooting 2000ISO no matter what ISO you set the camera too... and when you do change the ISO it only affects your exposure tools and monitoring - not what you are recording. This is for the purpose of adjusting back to normal in post later.

All this in my Ultimate exposure guide.

Yes with 3D LUT capability you can load up a nice custom Kodak print emulation LUT and impress yourself, and others on set.

I thought it was the opposite - ie ramp up the EI and the monitor gets brighter but the file does not.

Similar to a Red (last time I used it) where the ISO is nothing more than an in camera LUT in effect.

A couple of other thoughts from earlier in the thread.

Noise Reduction. I thought that it switching off was a design choice to keep the file 'intact' and then add NR in post - surely a sensible move for jobs where post will occur because then NR can be dialled to taste in the comfort of ones edit suite. It seems illogical to switch it on when using a profile that is heading for work in post (as opposed to shooting a baked look)

Disabling NR is all part of Sony's wisdom to keep the signal as pure as can be for post production.

Sure that is great, but we should have the choice then of using LUTS in custom mode where NR is enabled, and we can manually disable matrix, detail, etc.

Either way Sony is delivering NR in cineEI mode for F5/55 in December. I suspect it will make its way over to the FS7.

Another new one:

It seems that there is no aliasing and moire at 120fps (at least at first glance).

Looks very nice to me. I really like the colors. Not sure if it's Vimeo, but on some shots the blacks look a bit noisy, but yeah... hard to tell noise on the internet. I'm excited for the FS7.
