FS7: New Sony F7 XDCAM 4K Super 35mm Camcorder

"It takes me about five and a half full-finger pulls (where I pull across the dial using the entire length of my index finger) to change iris by a single stop."

This was the case with the FS100 and made the kit lens 'unusable'. I wonder if they will sort this out!

Have sony ever picked up a 5d or suchlike to find out how it should be done?

Serious noise at about 50 seconds, the 150fps shots - low light, frame rate or Vimeo compression? Looks pretty nasty.
Steve

Steve, I'd say its combination of low light, HFR, and possibly original exposure and/or grade. These are all things that contribute to visible noise in the practical world. Vimeo if anything will hide some of the noise which is the good news, but the original footage will be far more noisier than what you see online.

I also found on the F55 if I used a higher ISO and HFR combined the artifacts and noise was unacceptable to me, but it was somewhat subdued after going to vimeo. https://vimeo.com/76299054

Well I got an indefinite "maybe" from Juan Martinez about whether the Metabones adapter will be included with the FS7. Sounds like the idea has been raised but no decision from Sony yet. It would certainly be nice after advertising it in their roll out.

C'mon, that adapter doesn't cost the world.

I'd like them to work on the fimware hard before releasing. Some guys made excellent suggestions
for bringing the FS7 one step further (iris dial!!!).

And I think that I'll also want the handgrip more to the center of the camera.

What is there response so far from people creating content for broadcast about FS7? Is there a massive interest, is this going to be C300 killer or not so much?

The specs suggest yes...but as we all know...specs are not everything. Real world use always impacts the true capabilities of the camera compared to what is on paper. So far...the FS7 is looking like a great camera...and could very well be a market killer for the C300. Its not surprising being that the C300 is a few years old and we live in a fast pace technological climate.

So, for me....its a "wait and see" situation. Once its released...and those brave early adopters get a hold of it...we will find out all kinds of things that impact our view of this camera.

Based on currently known information...I would say yes....its a C300 killer. That could change if a slew of tradeoffs are uncovered. So far...I'm digging it.

Thanks for info! Sure, we have to wait to see, but I wanted to know what sort of initial response it's getting.
Side question: does metabones adapter/speed booster preserve weather sealing? That could be a weak point if not... :/ (of course in that case we can always use just native lenses)

Buzz is that it is definitely out speccing the C300.

Good question about the speedbooster and weather sealing. Not sure actually. Can anyone chime in? I expect that it is not but I do not know for sure.

Also question to others: if not is there any other adapter that is weather sealed? If there's a lack of it, we will have to bug Sony or other manufacturer to make them.

My Abel Cine contacts have told me that they plan a line of adapters in concert with a German manufacturer. These will be of higher quality than the Metabones. Do not know about weathersealing. I cannot comment more on the FS7 + Metabones.

Don't take "weather sealing" to serious. It doesn't mean something concrete anyway.

I used the Speedbooster with a sealed Canon 24-70/2,8L II in the worst situations with very
high temperatures, humidity and dirt. I also used one in slight rain and had no problems so far.

The Speedbooster itself is not sealed. The sealing of the lens closes the mount area, where
the lens sits in the adapter. But the adapter has no such lip to "seal" the mount area of the camera itself.
If you have to film in heavy rain for a longer time (which I don't think is useful) you can still use any kind
of gaffers tape or similar things.

And there is no adapter that is officialy "sealed" as far as I know...

Adam Wilt experimented with swapping the bolts in the handgrip extension to move it more under the lens. Cost pennies and he said it makes a world of difference for him.

I saw that. I'm hoping someone makes a solid solution if Sony doesn't offer anything. Having a lateral adjustment would be amazing.

I think that it is a fairly personal thing, based on one's individual physical size, arm length, etc. Were I to make such a mod for use over time, I think I would make a block to act as a spacer to give those bolts strength and protection. A hunk of Delrin withsome holes bored through it might be enough.

I did something similar with my own rig, put a Red Rock handle between the rods as opposed to using the default FS700 handle on the side. It was much, much better on the shoulder.

However, like Adam mentioned, with the handle in the middle I wasn't able to go low angle and it actually made it much more of pain to set it flat on the ground (which believe it or not, can be a bit of a pain after hours of shooting and you're tired). So I ended up just using the FS700 handle on the side as opposed to the middle Red Rock grip. Plus and minuses. With that said, I tend to shoot from the waist a lot and low angles, cradling the camera so it doesn't always live on my shoulder.

If I were primarily a shoulder shooter, the handle in the middle is perfect.

It would be good if the FS7 viewfinder had a 1/4" -20 underneath then I'd lose the handle and add a NATO rail and add something like a zacuto axis and a handle that can go over the lens instead of the body for front-heavy setups.

I think it should feel like a single unit rather than a camera with delicate parts hanging off it. I haven't seen the camera in the magnesium but it seems like a few third party accessories will really help with peace of mind. I got rid of nearly all add-ons with the fs100 - handle/mic holder/whatever it was, massive VF, even handgrip.
