NEW SONY CINEALTA in works

You are mistaken

You are mistaken

So you're actually certain they have a prototype. I'm sure you claim this because you've seen the physical working prototype and you've seen footage from it. Or are you just talking out of your ass?

The iPod came out about 2 DECADES after the walkman. And I'm sure Sony wasn't too worried about losing ground in this segment cuz they were making too much money on the Playstation and were focused on that. And with regards to Sony breaking into the video game console market, it wasn't much of a stretch for them since they're an electronics company. However, if Sony ever decided to make protective eyewear, I wouldn't bet on them succeeding.

By the way, if you read the interview with Jim, he says that his goal is to sell lenses that will go with his camera. Oakley's advantage is in the glass and not in camera technology. I hope you don't think Oakley will sell you a cheap camera so you can buy Nikon lenses to put on it.

"When I was involved in testing an early prototype of RED last year, it didn’t even have an enclosure. It was little more than a circuit board with a place to mount a lens. As predicted, it does now have a box. In fact, although the enclosure was stylish and innovative, that was about all that was really shown at NAB, along with a set of specifications, (copied below), of what they are trying to achieve."

The iPod came out about 2 DECADES after the walkman.

not sure what you are trying to prove.. other than you are implying that it took 2 decades before the ipod took over..therefore you also think that the RED needs two decades to make an impact on Sony's hd cam market? You missed my point. My point is to respond to your statement:

If you think Sony will just roll over and die, you guys are sadly mistaken.

they won't roll over and die... but the SONY president may make public statements like "at the launch of the new Cinealta UHD, that he was determined to take the spotlight in the market for uhd cameras away from RED. " .. you'll know what i am talking about after reading below.

And I'm sure Sony wasn't too worried about losing ground in this segment cuz they were making too much money on the Playstation and were focused on that.

Not too worried?

"(2004) Sony Corp. unveiled its first MP3-compatible, hard disk Walkman music player on Tuesday in an attempt to recover ground lost to Apple Computer's iPod. The world's biggest consumer electronics maker aims to reclaim the market for portable and personal music devices, which it helped to launch 25 years ago with its first Walkman," Lucas van Grinsven reports for Reuters."

Once again, too little too late.

"Sony President Kunitake Ando said this summer, at the launch of the new Walkman, that he was determined to take the spotlight in the market for portable music players away from iPod. "

If sony wasn't worried, why are they trying to reclaim the market? Sony is worried about their lost ground in this market. Thats why the sony president is aiming to "take the spotlight away from the ipod." Of course this hurts them.

"And with regards to Sony breaking into the video game console market, it wasn't much of a stretch for them since they're an electronics company."

You missed my point. It is true that going from an eyeglass company to hd cinema is a bigger leap than Sony making a playstation. My point was to show that SONY has the "potential" to lose domination in the 20,000 + hd market the same way their walkman lost ground to the ipod. When RED is released...Sony (as well a others) will have to step up to the plate and deliver more than what they have right now AND deliver it at a better price.

In addition, the oakley--> RED isn't as much of "STRETCH" as you think.

"We have the financial resources and project resources for this project that include a great design department, 3D modeling capability (for 15 years), liquid laser prototyping equipment, a full testing lab, optical and electronic engineers, 5 axis mills, molding machines, a titanium casting plant (where Romeos, Juliets, Pennys are made), electron beam gun vapor deposition equipment (same as Canon, Nikon, etc.) and a strong will."

not to mention their dreamteam:

However, if Sony ever decided to make protective eyewear, I wouldn't bet on them succeeding.

Yet the second thing that you and I agree on. As far as I know, Sony doesn't make their own lenses. ( I remember my old sony mini-dv camera had carl zeiss)

By the way, if you read the interview with Jim, he says that his goal is to sell lenses that will go with his camera. Oakley's advantage is in the glass and not in camera technology.

Dead wrong. RED's (not oakley's, RED is a separate company entirely. same founder, different company) advantage is clearly their technology.. ala mysterium sensor.

"4520X2540 pixels…DATA TO BURN At the heart of RED lives the 12-megapixel Mysterium™ CMOS sensor, Super 35mm sized, with unparalleled fidelity and flexibility. It combines low noise with superior charge capacity for dynamic range and color fidelity that allows you to finally have a no excuse option to 35mm film."

message from the founder:

" There is a group of us that feels the camera we really want just isn't available commercially and we don't see it on the horizon. We long for 35mm DOF in the digital world. We want flexibility and versatility. We want a small package that can act big. We want the ability to record UHD for the future and 1080P 60 fps for use right now. We want to know that we can record to just about any media. And use the lenses we have. Plus design some new ones we wish were being built but aren't. This is a tall order, but we are up for the opportunity to make a difference in this market."

Although they will be making great lenses..they are not going to achieve their goal on lenses alone. They need a camera that can do it. So RED's primary advantage is NOT in glass, it is in their sensor.

I hope you don't think Oakley will sell you a cheap camera so you can buy Nikon lenses to put on it.

Wow, interesting how you accuse me of talking out of my ass. Well I hope YOU don't think that the only lenses that will work with RED are RED lenses. Jim intended the exact opposite, he wants the camera to be compatible with other lenses.

for more lens info go here:

jarred: "Red plans to offer many lens mounts, the lens mount as you can see in the prototype is completely modular."

I am done responding to you (besides the NBA playoffs are about to begin). You clearly didn't bother to read about RED before discussing it.

Come join us in the RED forum to be enlightened.

I can't figure if XDCAM-HD should be called XDOA-CAM or XDCAM-HD.O.A.

Just bought my DVX100B this afternoon and the book was enclosed :) Looks like a good read. Yes?

What business did SONY have going into a videogame market dominated by Nintendo and Sega? Sony's playstation sales annhilated Sega (as a result of poor sales even stopped hardware production..RIP DREAMCAST) and Nintendo's gamecube and N64. Sony did it with their playstation. Apple's IPOD vs Sony WALKMAN? Back when the walkman was the big deal.. who would of thought back then that APPLE (a computer company) would ever dominate the mp3 market? Fast forward into the future...who would have thought an EYEGLASS company could dominate the HD digital cinema industry? History has shown that GIANTS can be outdone.

Well, Sony doesn't have a clue how to battle M$ new VISTA that was revealed last week at the biggie game event and VISTA is here and plays on multi-platform from XBOX360 to your desktop/laptop to your cell phone and all at the same time. You can be on your cell phone in an airport playing a game with a gamer at his house on a PC and also with a gamer on XBOX360 at college. Talk about cross platform? WOW! Bill Gates gave the presentation and it drove this multi-media company crazy. We have the vid and it's awesome. Goodbye iPod and Playstation with all their limitations. Moreover, the best part is that one can stop their game in progress from their cell phone and upload their saved position into their XBOX360 at home or their PC. In fact, one of the illustrations showed a guy sitting at an airport on his cell, painting his HOT gamer car, then uploaded it to his PC at home so that he can use that car when he lands at the next city then use the car to continue the game. WOW! What a future for M$ and goodbye Sony for the gamer market. My 2Cents.

I got to handle the non-functional prototype of this camera last week at the Santa Fe Worskshops. Same sensor as the sony HDC-1500. This is going to be a killer camera. I heard that a working prototype was demoed last night in LA. No reports yet.

I.

Totally separate, except in the same building, using the same fabrication facilities under the eye of Oakley founder Jim Jannard. Except for those niggling details, totally separate. LOL
